Fred, your question would be better answered on an E39 forum.
This board covers the model years of '89-95.
But since you asked, here are a couple things you should check or have checked.
1. The cooling system, such as, the expansion tank, water pump and thermostat. At about 60-70k miles is when these items usually need replacing due to failure. It's best when they are addressed as preventive maintenance to insure trouble free driving. Check the records of the car to see if they have been repaired in the past.
2. The rear suspension control arms should be checked also for bushing wear. These arms wear faster than the fronts, but have them checked along with the front upper and lower control arms.
3. Catalytic Converters, these should be checked also. They are very expensive to replace, plus there are two of them to boot! They have a habit of plugging up and melting, maybe because of fuel mixtures from the O2 sensors. Regardless, both items should be checked for proper operation and maintenance history.
4. Service records, the maintenance history of the car is very important. Have the oil changes been done on a regular basis and on time? What about the other items that require care and maintenance on a regular schedule? These are questions that need to be answered and proof of service history is your only way.
5. One option is to have an independent BMW mechanic check the car for you. This can cost as much as a couple hundred dollars, but can save you a bundle in the long run.
Do a search on the web for 540i.com site, they have a lot of information that could help your decision and educate you on the finer things that you could appreciate owning this car.
Good luck Fred!
