Has anyone replaced these gas filled struts for the rear hatch glass window on a 530i touring wagon. Bentley manual is is too vague looks like head liner needs to come out. Help please

You get the main idea with Bill's reply. But it calls for a special tool. Don't let that stop you. I did both the window shocks in my touring without it. But you will need a looong screwdriver (think my 14" was just barely long enough). It attaches back in the roof with a ball and socket that you have to pry off, and of course pry the new one back on. It sounds more daunting than it really is. The other thning that helped me a lot was one of those long thin flexible lights that I could put in there to see what was going on. But it is definately worth it - having that glass hit you in the head a couple times was enough for me.
There's a write up on this repair in the old archives too - search it out.
