Ok, used to have one of these storage compartments:

But it broke so I removed it. That left me with this:

Some PO has cut my centre console so that the above
storage compartment would fit. But now I can't use this
space because everything falls down that hole.
Does anyone have any suggestions what I could use to
cover this space (other than the factory cassette box)?
Particularly an armrest would be great since my car didn't
come with one. So has anyone seen any armrests that
cover that hole?
If not then do you know the part number for the lid in
the top picture? It has a BMW logo on it but no part #
that I can see.

why don't u have armrests? are those m5 seats?
cuz i had regular seats with armrests before i got
my m5 seats...
but anyway, i would put sunglasses case there, or
a tire pressure guage or maybe a boost controller?

Not all seats came with armrests, at least in european models. Nope, they aren't M5 seats. Just regular black leather seats, not even the sport seats.
I like the idea of a boost controller :) , but unfortunately due to local legislation forced induction is not really an option.

i bought an M5 center console, and it has that same hole! I stuck a metal case that my cologne came in to store coins for the car wash. Fits perfectly and nothing slides back in there now.

Right at the back of the slot I mounted my remote bass control for the amp. It's black, you'd have to look very closely to see it.

Just out of curiosity, what's the difference between the M5 center console and a normal one?

It was black, and $76 for an entire console setup :D The area around the shifter is recessed and has little areas to stick a cell phone or something so it wont slide around.

Thanks. Very nice, I'll have to keep my eyes open for one of those.
