View Full Version : OT, Anybody got any recommendations for the best way to strip

paint off of steel casement windows in my house?....Waiting for parts and i started using a propane torch and scraper to strip them... doesn't seem terribly effective. Thanks.

i might raise a flag of concern here,please make sure to use a mask,burnt paint emmits poisonous fumes,i am sure you are using one,but as a reminder.Its a PITA job,and i used the same tools you are using now for the same purpose :(

did you try that paste type paint remover? Might need a few applications but just brush it on, go to the next window etc and come back scrape em and recoat with stripper. Make sure you wash the things down real good before repainting.

How many windows and how wide are your stiles and rails? I have and have used www.silentpaintremover.com with great success on an old fireplace mantel and tile that had tons of paint on it. You MUST use a pull-scraper though. I know its expensive but it really is great and I've used ALL kinds (soy, peel away, some super-industrial stuff from friend, etc). It even has flanges/guards to keep heat off of window or unwanted area. PM me if you need more info.

my guess is some kind of paint stripper or mechanical means...i think steel is to good an heat conductor for the hot air/propane ....my experience anyway,hot air or torch excellent with timber but not so good on metal

i like the spray "aircraft stripper" for most of my car type paint removal, wally world usually has it in there paint and body section, if you have a lot of windows finding it in a gallon container may be more cost effective, ill ask my mom this evening what's a good product, shes a general contractor/painter

mom said laquer thinner gets off mill finishes and baked on enamel, best would be something called zip strip gel, you can brush it on wherever you want it with control, a important point she said to brush it on with one stroke only, more then that aparently does something to the effectiveness of it

I second the aircraft stripper, it's worked well for me, and also MEK, a very nasty chemical that you can get at home depot or lowes in the paint supplies.

Actually I saw it on another BMW site. I don't go looking for it but if I stumble across some good stuff, I'll have a look. Sometimes I need a break from looking at firmware, so I look at another type of "software". Or maybe the pics are firmware and the work I'm doing is software! :p
