Well, tomorrow I'm going to bite the bullet and put a deposit down on the Switchlogic gearshift system. It uses the electric column shift stalk (which I don't currently have) to offer a steptronic-style manual shift mode, which replaces the winter mode on my EH gearbox.

It's a touch on the pricey side, but hey, you can't take it with you, right?

I've made the decision to hang on to the car for a while yet, so I might as well spend a bit of cash and have some fun along the way. My ultimate aim is to get into a powerful manual 5 series at some point: E45 M5 or E39 540i are the likely ones. Until my job situation stabilises though, I figure I'll stick with the one I've got.

hmm... no self-install, authorized distributers only? how much is it? i didn't see a price on their website and i dunno if i wanna wait for the PDF to load ;)
but it sounds pretty cool, i'd go for it if it were a reasonable price.

The PDFs are very small, so won't take much time to load. The system is £500, with fitting on top (about three hours).

Go for it!.
A couple of years ago, I was looking at a similar investment in my E34 525 auto. Seems that someone in Singapore did the conversion and Loved it!. Seems to be a different car after the install, but certainly takes a few days to get the hang of it.

Now, I have a full manual so does not need SwitchLogic again. Lets us know how it feels when you have that done. Very curious as it is a rare upgrade. A pricey one at that but certainly very rare indeed.

assuming you meant E34, since they're the only consecutive #s bmw has, well, E12 too, but... you get the idea....E23 too, crap....

Yes, meant E34, but wasn't paying attention when I typed that. Off by one position on the keyboard... Monday's not far off now - hurrah!

OK, well, it's done. And I love it :) Complete manual control over the box, all via a column stalk. Shifts feel quicker, even though they're probably not, but the sense of control is really quite something.

Sport and Economy mode work just as before (at least, I think they do - haven't used them since...) but Winter mode becomes manual mode. It won't let you over-rev when you're on the gas, nor will it change down unless safe to do so. It has cute tricks like letting you dial in two/three downshifts before standing on the brakes: it'll only change down when the revs are right. It'll also only change into first below 10mph as the engine braking is /fierce/. Think sport mode with the lever in 2nd coming to a stop, and you'll know what I mean.

psssssssssssst...your steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car!

Looks nice, though I do dislike that they labeled the stalk. Either way though, glad you're enjoying it!

Noooo - I think you'll find it's you lot who have steering wheels on the wrong side :D

Stalk labelling is a bit gauche: I mean, *that* font. But hey, not the end of the world...

Switchlogic is still great. Presumably. The car as a whole is less great: starter motor issues that I've yet to get fixed, aided and abetted by a flat battery and an alarm system that seems to deny all knowledge of its keyfobs.

I'm currently in the quandry of either (a) getting it shipped to BMW for a keyfob resynch or (b) getting a mobile alarm specialist to rip the old system out and replace it with something that works.

Neither appeals, but I can't do the starter motor until one of those happens.

All of which is a little off-topic. I'd still recommend Switchlogic to anyone who's got the spendies to spare on it.
