There was a discussion on roadfly about this. It does not need to be screwed on but also has some disadvantage (looks) according to some. Here one comment:
It's got flexible foam flaps on the bottom. Despite being sufficiently large to hold my .5 liter insulated travel mug (too lazy to wander out to measure right now), it seems to stablilize littler items well, too. The foam flaps hold my small energy beverage cans ok (~53mm od - about the same as those Japanese mini vending Calpis (sp?) and cold-coffee cans, iirc), but I'm not an aggressive driver, either, so one might want to bolster the flaps with a donut insert or somesuch if that's the only size can to be used, and one wishes to go drifting . . . (not).
IIRC, he also includes double-side tape (or you can easily add your own), to better secure the tray, but I've found that the fit is close enough that friction suffices, and mine has stayed nicely put with no tape.
Don't get me wrong - I've found it to be well worth the purchase price, but it is kind of funny paying $35 when it looks and feels similar to $0.50 doggy-chew or children's toys, but illustrates the power of off-shoring and mass manufacturing, and reminds me how much I usually benefit from technology in the manufacturing process.
--------------------
The seller is a member of roadfly and I have contacted him directly if he sells also overseas. He told me that if there is enough qty, he will ship. So I have to ask the E32 Club members Japan.
Just wanted to hear some opinions. He says if he ships in bulk - let's say 10 pieces- shipping will be abt $ 10 only/piece. I assume that the normal Ebay price will be abt $ 35,-.

In Japan only this one is sold and that costs about $ 60-70

LOL! NOW you say so :) I already bought one off eBay and its on its way...

....On my E34 and thought it was great. It wedges into the shift area very tight and will not move once it's in place. But it will easily remove if you wish. It will not fit on cars with the ASC switch though. Although it may look a bit cheap in photos, I found that it was very well made and just about indestructable. It incorporates a nice little tray area too, that will hold keys and cellphones and keep small items from sliding around. I had tried two previous holders, one a flip-up and one that hung over the console. But they were complete duds compared to that one. I'd say it was a buy for the buck equal to getting a chip for $200US.

Just MHO.

My dearest wife always puts the keys and the cell phone, cigarette lighter and other stuff on the center console and I am worried about scratches when it moves from one side to the other when driving :(
With this one - o.k., might not look that good- that problem is solved.

This one is also not bad, was/is (?) sold by bavauto, but costs apparently more than 100 $

Hmmm... I have been looking for a cup holder. So is it genuine or not?? How many Aussies would like one?? Try and get a bulk buy thing going...

Just exchanged some PM's with BigKriss as he was thinking to get one out of the lot I want to order for Japan. But I guess that is too expensive with postage US>Japan>AUS and maybe import duty into Japan if I order let's say 10 sets.
He just sent an email to the seller directly. It is HerbB from roadfly. So I think there is no problem with delivery, as other roadfly members also bought from him.
Someone in AUS has to coordinate that for all. And for direct shipping US>AUS.
And without Ebay might be even better.

Just found a pic of one in use, that means not from the Ebay pics

I would definately be interested. I emailed the seller as per Shogun's instructions.

This is what he had to say

"Hello, Nice to hear of the referal. Can you tell me approximately how many upholders you may want? Also if I can bulk pack them. The shipping
cost goes down significantly if I can put more than one in a box, but I
do not know how you would distribute them when they get to you. Your
call. Easiest way to contact me is hbarnard@pworksinc.com"

How many aussies would be intersted in buying one?

It's nice. Holds things just fine, and it's not in your way when you shift. I used to just use the center bay between the armrests and stuff my mochaccinos in there... but I was always afraid the cup would rupture and I'd have a little kiddie pool of coffee at my elbow.

I just bought the smaller one also - the one that straddles the edge of the console. Seems to work nicely, but I'd like it if the holes were about 1/4 inch larger diameter.

Now I need to remove / repair the scratches on the wood around the shift lever - any suggestions?

I go too sideways to worry about cups and their holders. I usually have the girlfriend hold it.

the only way theres any open liquid around my console is if its in a bottle and has a cap. I have to remove my seat from a potato chip junior laughs at everytime he sees it.

I have the same holder but it does not touch the wodd. I did use double stick tape to secure to the console edge.

The scratches were not caused by the cupholder, but by putting other stuff down on the wood - I'm now wanting to spiff up the area.

Thanks for the double stick tape idea - I'm gonna do that, too.

You mean the smaller ones on the side?
They are sold in Japan by a company called poleposition, which is specialized on 3 and 5 series cars repairs and accessories. I do not know if they are made in Japan
or USA. Maybe someone knows.
Here they are sold for about 60 US $, depending on exchange rage. Here is the auction, all in Japanese of course, but you can see the pics

Yeah, I got one of those off ebay... it's not quite so elegant, but very functional.

I can't fit a Sobe bottle in it, but just about everything else goes perfect. The little tray is handy too. It will stay put just by it's fit, but I used some velcro patches just in case.

Try a mild polish like Scratch X by Megiurs (sp) to remove light scratches in the wood clear cost and then polish with a good wax. I like synthetic waxes. Check the Roadfly detailing forum as they have some very serious detailing people with excellent advice as well as quality sources for products.

Thread resurrection... would someone kindly post a better photo of what this cupholder looks like (this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-535-525-E32-E34-CUPHOLDER-CUPHOLDERS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33695QQihZ00 8QQitemZ180059595050QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)) installed? I'd like to know how it fits the overall interior... maybe a shot taken from the rear passenger door would give a good broad perspective

p.s., or direct me to a better cupholder if you so wish...

I have it installed in my car. The seller owns an E34 and an E32 and therefore he has designed that cupholder, in his own company produced.

Okay, I'll try one more time... does anyone have a photo of the interior of their car with this this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-535-525-E32-E34-CUPHOLDER-CUPHOLDERS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33695QQihZ00 8QQitemZ180059595050QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)cup holder installed? Shogun kindly posted some of the manufacturer's photos, but I was hoping for a broader perspective, a picture like the one below (my current interior without any cup holder). I don't want to just drop $40 on something that completely ruins the look of the interior. Brian? Robin? Beez? Anyone? Thanks in advance

On a tan interior with woodgrain it won't look all that good. Kinda like how your e-brake is black and a bit out of place! :)

I have a black interior and it looks just fine.
