Need truth about wheels

Hello from Kiev BMW club. A lot of peoples in my city goes by BMW E34 (from 518 to M5). We had a very interesting disput about wheels. All friends spoke to me, that 225/55 R16 (7.5J ET20) whells ideally approach for any E34 car.
When I have tried to put such wheels on my machine E34 (535 '90), I have found out, that forward wheels rub about racks a little. I have found the similar information under the reference http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/upgrade/wheels_upgrade.htm.
Tell to me the truth: really 535 bimmers, let out in 1990, have features regarding forward wheels?

the wheel offset has more to do with rubbing than the tires do. E34s are supposed to have a 20mm offset with a max of 9 inch width in the rear and 8 inch in front...or something close to that.

It likely depends on what brand of tire you're running. Some are fatter than others and would rub the struthousing.

A proper offset front wheel with a 225/55 tire on it should come NO WHERE NEAR rubbing.

like Jon says, if you are using a 16x7.5" et+20 wheel and a 225/55-16 tire, you should clear all suspension components by a good 10mm. If you have a rubbing issue of any type, something is either bent or broken.....or the offset is inaccurate. I have run 245/40-18 on 18x8.5" et+20 wheels, 235/45-17 on 17x8.5" et +15 wheels, and 16x8" et +20 wheels with both 225/55-16 and 235/50-16 tires and NEVER had a problem. Hope this helps

Shema, what tire are you putting on your 7.5J16 ET20 wheel? Some wheels have quite a round sidewall that may stick out further than normal and rub some components.

Honestly, I don't think you should have any problems with 225/55-16's on an ET20 wheel. For reference, I have 235/45-17 tires on 8Jx17H ET20 BBS wheels on my front end and I have no rubbing at all. This is even with the car lowered 1.5"/37mm.

The higher speed-rated tires (V, Z, W/Y) should have a very straight/flat sidewall...

Thanks a lot for advices. I tried to use Dunlop SP SPORT 9000 and Michelin Pilot. Both models are in W index. I think that there are some problems in front of my car (Diagnostics of disorder-convergence has not revealed deviations from standards ).I have found the temporary decision of a problem - have established disks with ET15.

Shema, do you mean to say you have used a 5mm spacer on the front to push your wheels outwards from the original ET20 to an effective 15?

You may also want to check your front suspension components since there should normally be lots of clearance between tires and suspension components.

Also note that if you have aftermarket sways (I have RDs) the front left will rub at lock even with this tire setup.

255/40-17 on 10" in rear..

sachs kit is set to high in the back

no rubbing at all, not even with passengers...
just squeaks from stupid polyurethane bushings

But why? 275 is far too wide for an E34. I don't see a need for a tire wider than 235, even on supercharged/turbo E34s. Please don't rice-up your car! Leave that to Pimp My Ride. :)

I have used another disks (from E39) with ET15. It was necessary to establish rings in width 15 mm (75.6 on E39 -> 74.1 on E34).
What is "suspension components"? I cant translate it :(

Similar, that at your disks ET was less than 10. You will lose in dynamics of dispersal with such thick wheels. But the rear view will be impressing.

What brand tiers are you running?

Ummmmmm-errrrrrr bahnstromer, you may want to use a 265/40-17 instead as it is exactly the same diameter as the 235/45-17 front tires, it's also the best size tire for a 10" wheel, and it will not require as much fender rolling (if any). Plus it will look some what "low-profile" when compared to the Corvette tire you are considering.
