Can anyone advise....my bmer does not have the long black runners that all the other tourers have, & without these I cannot buy the standard bmw oem roof bars that are supposed to fit.
So, I guess I'll have to use gutter type roofbars, but does anyone know what type / make / model will fit?
any help welcome.

No roof rack? No sunroof either? Let's see pics of it
In that case you will need Thule 396 rails and load bars for your touring. It will look like this with the Thule Evolution 1600 combi box on top. REI can outfit you with this setup for under $400 all in.

I eventually used a modified Thule foot pack so my load bars would snap like this in my rails.

go to www.thule.com and plug in E34 and it will confirm whether I was right on the 396 model or not.
best, and lets see that touring.

Thanks - correct number as far as I can work out. Not a very elegant solution sadly......
I will post a photo of the rail less roof!

You could find a junker touring and unbolt the rails from inside the ceiling, take some good measurements and cut them into your tourer.

here's the photo. I don't think I'd like to drill into the roof in order to fit the 'factory runners'.
