Test your knowledge on this one! I was so excited to purchase my second used BMW a 92 525i. After about two weeks of perfect driving I noticed a small transmission leak. I took it to a transmission specialist. It was the upper seal leaking, They pulled the auto trans and fixed it. However, In the process they noticed my Thrust washer was cracked inside the tranny, After installing a replacement washer. They gave it a test drive. All is fine they said. After driving it a few days in town with no problems I hit the interstate. It wanted to stay in third gear and not go down to fourth. Bing, Limp Mode, Program Transmission.

If I moved the shifter into N while on the interstate I could drop it back down into D and it would drop into 4th for about 10 seconds then rev back up to third. Ultimately, ending up in Limp mode again.

I got 2 codes code 20 Speed Sensor and code 100 Speed Rotation to high for gear selected.

I replaced the shift selector, the shift Assembly, The Trans Speed Sensor and it still does the same. It never did this before the reseal. They swear it is nothing they did and that I may need a new transmission. However it drives fine as long as I’m in the city and don't use 4th gear.

So they performed a service on your tranny. A service in which they cracked the tranny open, replaced parts and now it doesn't work correctly.

Hmmm...........

They broke it or didn't put something together correctly. Either way I'd say it's their fault and up to them to make it right.

A GM automatic transmission with a problem?

I've definitely seen that before :)

As Ashley said -- take it back, if the transmission specialist is worth anything/knows something about BMW's. My guess is that they're not. Where are you in the world? I'm assuming you're in the US. If so, find a reputable shop via http://www.iaibmwsp.org/

Sorry to hear that you've run into trouble this early in owning the car. It sounds like the car was being sold for a reason, though :(

[FONT=Arial Black]I took it to a transmission specialist. Please tell me this 'specialist' wasn't AAMCO.

If it was - you found your problem.

Hi Ashley.

Nope, so far as I know, the only e34's to have the 4hp-22 are the M20 & M30 powered cars...So any '91 and above should have the GM Strasbourg A4S-310R.
