hey guys,

I've got the original weaves on my '90 535. they get full of break dust so easily and are a real pain to keep clean. I was thinking of painting them either black or anthricite(like a charcoal color) the car is black w/ red leather. has anyone here done this? was wondering what it would look like. I'll be tinting the windows too, so was thinking the all black look would be slick, while making the wheels look good all the time. does anyone have pictures of painted basketweaves? also, does the centercap piece hold the paint well enough. IIRC, it's made of plastic(can't go check, I'm in another country right now) here are the only OK pictures I have of it right now: http://community.webshots.com/album/236994233QPpypP

Is red a factory color? Don't think I've ever seen that before.

The original owner said something about a special order or something. apparantly it's factory original....anyone know how rare red leather is? it's quite bright....and I love it.

I've had lots of experience painting all kinds of stuff and you can paint anything. The only thing I would be concerned about is putting a good clearcoat of some kind on it to help with scratches. What I have done on some parts with my boat is brought them to a powder coater because I needed a strong thick coat of black on some alum. parts. If you strip the rims down to metal (sand or media blastingor a hell of a lot of grinding) you can probably negotiate a decent price on the paint by slipping your wheels in with some other job. Would look pro quality.

You could paint the center of the wheels antricite or black and polish the other part of the rims, that would look real slick. The only thing is getting the paint using chemical stuf which eats the paint away( don' t know how that **** is called ) Using this stuff will prevent you from some deep sanding scratches and save a lot of sanding. We use the same method on old style schnitzer wheels.

paint stripper? Derek A. repainted his rims a few weeks ago and they turned out great! See if you can find that.

cool. i will do this when i get back to the states. will probably try to polish the rim and paint the center....if it doesnt look right i guess i could always paint the rim. I reckon i may do it in anthricite cause black may make it look like just a steel wheel that needs a hubcap since its not a dramatic open wheel design....no?

yep, I think it would be a mistake. Derek also polished the rim part.

Powdercoating the inside and polishing the lip would look good, even though it would be a bit of work and be sort of overdone considering they are just 15" basketweaves.
