A reminder to those who haven't replaced the pollen filter

The whole job took 30 min. Wasn't nearly as bad as everyone said. Looks scarier than it is. But wow am I glad that filter is there. Even found a bunch of small leaves trapped in it. Air rushing into cabin is about twice as strong now.

Nahhh, I think only after 1990 (or 1991) is equipped w/ the microfilter.

Did mine a couple of weeks ago, it's RHD and still wasn't as bad as I had expected, only took about 15 or 20 minutes.

Made a world of difference to the air flow, now position 2 feels the same as position 4 used to.

My "trick" is to drive the front wheels up on ramps. Makes it easier to work on.

My car's production date is 10/'91 and I don't have A/C - do I still have a microfilter?

I found a procedure by doing a search for microfilter.

I assume that your car is LHD so the procedure is not quite the same as mine.

Your car will have the filter behind the glove compartment, mine is along side the pedals.

My filter is in two parts to allow it to fit past the clutch pedal, the two halves are quite tight together and I found that if I slid the two halves apart and then together again a few times then they became a bit easier.

Slide them apart until they almost separate then slip the top part into the slot and push the bottom part home.

Then put the car back together again.

European cars had A/C only as na option, and most cars with A/C didn't have a sunroof.

SOMEWHERE I read that even though the early year E34 such as '89 & '90 did not come with the air filter, the brackets and fittings are in the car, so a filter can be installed.

IS THIS TRUE, or a myth?

Is there anyway for cars with no micro filter to install a filter somewhere? Or have some kind of frame fabricated? Where does the A/C suck in air from in the car?

10 minutes!!!!! 3 hours for me. I was a bit tentative at first, but last night went for it. RHD, so working underneath the pedals. Finally located the green cover at the back & realised that I could have got to it in 5 mins. However, then it started getting difficult. The replacement element (from puravent) doesn't split into two pieces......had to take the steering column apart to get it in (& was contemplating taking the clutch pedal off). Anyway, all done now, and I'm glad I did - the old filter had a hole the size of a 50p coin in it.

After I switched to Mobil 1 0W-40 I did it in 8 minutes.

4 and 1/2 to 5 minutes after i changed to german castrol and installed a tornado :D alls i gots to do is pound twice on the housing, like the fonz, and say "ehhhhh", like the fonz, and it just falls out...

I would just have taken the filter back and got a replacement that did come in two.

I think some of these posts are starting to get silly. :D

RHD auto or manual need the 2 piece filter or you will be in for a long day.

the space in front of the evaporator core is tight. You shold be able to squeeze one in, even if there wasn't one from OEM.

For those prior to 91, it might be worthwhile to check the area, as you'll probably find leaves, etc. that might be covering the evaporator. suggest getting some toothbrushes, too.
