'94 325 convertable top broken, easy fix?

We're looking at this 325iCA for my daughter. The one issue is that the convertable top doesn't work. The dealer (not BMW) says it's a motor. Is anyone familiar with this car and is this a DIY fix?

I can't comment directly on the E36, but on the E30 it is pretty much a dealer job - or a heavy DIY. In either case, most people seem to remove the motor altogether and move the roof manually.
