View Full Version : thing under the accelerator pedal
just curious...
what is the thing under the accelerator pedal for? is it simply to reduce the maximum distance that the pedal can travel or does it do something else?
thanks!

It is a kickdown button.
Press it with the pedal and it selects the best lower gear for optimum passing power. If your in 4th, but should be in 2nd to pass, it will put you in 2nd.

I've got a 540i 6-Speed, and you can screw it in our out. It kinda seems like a primitive throttle limiter... But I don't know.
right?
Thats done with the TPS isnt is?

welcome to the site, mveale! Same on my 6-sp...although it doesn't really seem to limit the horsies under the hood! :p

As I say stomp is done with TPS, the manual car pedal is simply a stopper for pedal travel

That is why some people get so frustrated and complain that their kick down does not work :p

I dont know about auto's, but in manuals you can twist it just like a screw, and it will go lower or higher.

The thing is actually a button .. when u accelate hard to race or some thing it gives u maximum gear time lik ethe rpm goes all the way to red rather than shift at around 5900 - 6000 rpm it goes to the red line n shifts it .. or when ur going at around 100kmph and suddenly u want to race or get faster as soon as possible u press ur accelerator all the way and the gear shifts to 2nd and then there is a bimmer thats flying.
i think u get my point
hmmm ok... thats nice to hear... ill hit that thing more often to test it if it works :D

Careful about adjusting the stopper! Before you do you should remove the rubber intake-hose from the throttle-body because the butterfly should be at exactly 90 degrees at Wide-Open-Throttle. The butterfly in these throttle-bodies can actually begin to close in the opposite direction if the cable is pulled as far as possible.

Why are you resurrecting a post from 3 years ago?
I only twigged to it when I saw our old mate ukm5 answer!

This site is a knowledge base; it doesn't matter how old the thread is.
In fact, we adjusted my friends '89, yesterday; it began to close in the opposite direction at WOT. Although, we then adjusted his throttle cable so there was no slack in it. I wonder if that threw off the adjustment we did under the pedal... oops. lol! No wonder when he would step on it it would make this loud CLACK noise.

ooh - may i suggest you check the tranny - if the kickdown cable gets too tight it'll pull out of its seal.
there are clips that break inside and you have to change the whole cable. i think...

i'm curious about the '89 - does it have wires leading to it or is it just a stopper? (the 'thing under the pedal')
