I had to unfortunately buy pheonix gold 6.5's (i dont remember may be 6.25's its been a while since, but they were the only speakers that would match the bolt pattern that the audio place had, and well...im sick of the cracking, low quality, distortion, and low treble. What do you guys use? or know of to be high quality? =)

the rear plastic stock speaker holders are for a 5 1/4" speakers, you need to so some custom fab work to get the 6.5" in the rear.

I agree with you entirely.
Too many automatically assume all the factory speakers must be total crap and wind up butchering their cars to fit some Chinese made junk that looks good and has 500watts PMPO written on the box.
The factory 5 1/2" rubber surround woofers actually work very well as a bass-mid especially if they are used with a sub and rolled off below around 80-100hz.
Too much... 'Throwing out the baby with the bath water' IMHO ;)

Totally agree, I have tried several head units, all having a different sound, by far the best is (as always) a Pioneer. The OE speakers are really capable with this unit.

Are those the premium sound ones that "sit" on the rear deck? I have a few of those sitting around -- never tried them out.

yep, the main driver in the plastic box is of the same size as the regular e34 speakers, the ones in the kick panels too

How can you get your hands on them?

get em from a salvaged bimmer, any of the 80s cars with the "upgraded sound systems" will have 2 to 4 of them (e28/24s have a weird oval version in front) on e30s any of the es/is cars have them and quite a few regular cars came with them, e23/24s had em too

Yes, they're the same front and rear with the premium sound system.

Listen to MB Quarts speakers and you'll be very impressed! They are little pricey but worth the money. And they are made in Germany. :D

Buying a new speaker system is very delicate as you never will get the sound you hear at a car shop in your own car. The more expensive brands such as Dynaudio, DLS, Focal,Boston (pro series), MB Quart, Rockford and others tend to need a lot of play hours before the really start to sound the part. Many forget this tiny detail and therefore consider these sets as bad sounding. Also bear in mind the regular brands such as Pioneer kenwood etc, state very high power rates but actually are not able to cope with head unit power most of the time and don' t last for long. If you are planning to buy a regular brand, please consider the oem speaker Winfred suggested. They are extremely durable and don't sound bad at all. They only need a new tweeter set up as the oem ones are very linear and don' t reflect the high notes side ways enough to create the real stereo sound.
