hey guys, has any1 of you ever readout the code plug of the instrument cluster? i need an US coding for my car, because i want this "fasten belts"-message have to work (it's not provided in ECE models like mine). the model and year shouldn't matter if this fasten belts-message appears in this car, but should be after Feb 1989, a brown (93C46) or blue (93C56) code plug.
i mean something like this:

Like the CEL, OBD, and OBDII, the fasten seat belt message is only 'required' in North America. If you install a US coding plug you will get odo and tripmeter readings in miles and not km... as well as inheriting the donor car's odo and tripmeter info.
While you can change the language of the display you cannot change the units of measurement in the display.

yes, but you can customize the data, see above. in the coding plug is all the information you can adjust individually. mileage, # of cylinders, manual or automatic transmission, capacity of the fuel tank, speedometer to 150, 160, 170 or 180mph, VIN, tachometer to 6000, 7000 or 8000 rpm, mileage... there is no "either... or". e.g. you can build an instrument cluster with us coding, km scales, oil temperature from the M5, tachometer to 7000 rpm and 180mph speedometer. also, there's no problem to adjust an instrument cluster from a 750i so it works in a 535i, or one from a M5 working in a 540i automatic and so on. i already did it a few times, so i have the 280 km/h speedometer from the E32 750i installed in my 525i.

so i just need the data from an US coding plug to replace a few bits in my ECE coding plug. a new one costs $110 here and the dealers are way too incometent to order the US version from the code plug, too.

See my post about the 535 > 520 dash install.To alter the coding plug we are gonna need either dedicated software, or a definition of all those 8-bit hexadecimals. The mileage on the coding plug could in theory run to 999999 so mileage must be stored in two separate locations, for example FFFF=65535 - too low.Was that a dump of your coding plug you posted? Hopefully we'll have the plug thing cracked soon!

in the check control instrument clusters, the mileage is not stored in two locations. definately not! it's written on a string of a few bytes. but it's not a good idea to explain how it works on a public forum ;) you also need no specific software, if you know what each hexadecimal address is for, you don't need more than the windows notepad.
the dump is from a 1992 M5 ECE.

I also have an SI 750iL cluster in my 525 Touring. The only issue I have besides the fuel economy meter being WAY out is the OBC believes I have 90 litres instead of 81 litres when the tank is full.
I also have a US coding plug from my original cluster.
All the numbers on the side are:
BMW
62.11-8 350 522
Rev 6
X142-45404-08
Will this work?
And how do I recalibrate the size of the fuel tank?

hi shayne,
that's the problem. for recalibrating the fuel tank size, you have to readout your code plug and change a few bytes in it. to do this, you'll need an eeprom programmer for a 93C46 (brown code plug) or 93C56 (blue code plug) eeprom. same with the economy meter, you can change it after you've readout it. your OBC thinks that you've a M70 engine installed which consumes much more fuel than your M50, because the OBC uses the data stored in the code plug from the instrument cluster.

try to build this eeprom writer. all you need is an old LPT printer cable and small male connectors so they fit in the female connector holes in the code plug case. read out the eeprom and show me the file, i'll fix it for you. but notice that the eeprom writer works ONLY in real dos mode!

hehe, yes that's weird :D
in fact, many E30, E32, E34 drivers in germany install the US-style parking light in the front indicators, side marker lights in the bumpers, daytime running light and so on.

I have pulled that data for a couple of coding plugs that I have. They are all from Australian cars. There is a brown plug from an e32 735il auto, a brown plug from an e34 535i manual and a blue from an e34 M50 520i auto. The data can be interchanged between the blue and the browns if you put some data padding in the right byte segments.

do australian E32/E34 have the fasten belts-warning?
and right, they can be interchanged. the more memory of the blue 93C56-eeprom is used für the service interval system AFAIK

sure, same here. the indicator works on my 525i, too. but i want this "fasten belts"-warning in the Check Control display

If I were to send you this coding plug (as described above from a 1993 US spec 525) can you pull the required information for the seatbelt indicator and send it back?
