ATF pouring out of fill hole

I am changing the ATF on my 1994 525iT for the first time. I just opened the fill plug (the one on the left side) and the old fluid came pouring out--like as much as a quart. Did the previous owner screw up?

nope, it will pour out the fill hole if the car is not running.

Even that much? What is the difference from when it is running?

I freaked the first time I pulled the fill cap on mine.

if the car has been sitting for a while a quart or two can drain out of the converter plus all of the fluid that's not pumping up the clutch packs
