With my 94 build 540 i checked for diff setup yesterday. the service manual says, 'look at the rear left of the final drive housing for the ratio and 's' or 'o'
i read s239 - does this mean 's'-Limited slip and '239' 2.39:1 final drive, or am i reading the wrong numbers...

i think your looking at the wrong numbers, 2.39 is way too low. I haven't found the plate on my diff yet.

the 540 does have a very high(low numerically) final drive.....

2.93 not 2.39

you should have a 2.93 diff.

There is a small plate on one of the bolts holding the rear cover, it's about 0,5cm times 4cm.
it sounds to me like you are reading the right place, but the wrong numbers :)

to check if you have lsd put your car in neuteral, jack up one rear wheal, if you turn it easy -- no lsd..

Can anyone tell me which diff's can be used on an e34 540/6?

I have heard the 750 and M5's where the main donor candidates. Looking at the table, it's looks like the 525's have a ratio (3.23) I would be interested in, if it could be used.

typically a S on the tag designates a LSD.

I want to recall that you can fit in a 3:15 diff from ...argh...the 8 series? I recall them being rare and coveted.

AFAIK the m5 and 540 have the big case dif.......normal e 34 have the medium case
