View Full Version : How Do You Reprogram The ODO

Parts of my instrument cluster display burned out so I picked up a new instrument cluster off Ebay. However, when I plugged it in my Odometer is now reading 220,000 miles on it. Everything else works perfect, but I don't want to add 70,000 more miles to my vehicle just because I changed out the cluster. Does anyone know how I can re-program the odometer?

cut to the chase u wana clock ur car dont u!!!
lol either way you cant, well can but cant

it depends what type of cluster u have, the early ones have the coding plug, which is the chip with the milage on built into the brown plug on the wiring loom, later ones have it plugged directly into the cluster on the back, u can see it if u look at the back of the cluster.

now the early ones, with it built into the wiring loom use a huge HML075 IC which is a nightmare to decode, whereas the later ones use a later chip which can be reprogrammed with a standard eeprom programmer - but u cant just chage values its based on an encoded values

so basic answer is ur stuck with whatever miles ur car currently shows, unless u take the coding plug from your old cluster and put it in your new one, however its highly likely ur just milage clocking and therefore dont have any old cluster, but benefit of the doubt! you can swap them over presuming they are the same type

prop the back end up, put it into reverse and put a brick on the accelerator

as long as you do not change the chip, an even not so clever guy can easily check that the cluster has been manipulated.
Because the chip contains much more info such as the chassis number etc.

What is the backplate colour of your cluster you removed and you installed?

I wrote yesterday on a U.K. board:

I do not know how often I wrote this and now I have it in English and German, so no need to change anymore. ;)

till 02/89:
old cluster with grey back with coding plug in the cable loom.
bis 2/89:
Altes Kombi (mit grauer Platte) mit dem Codierstecker im Kabelbaum.

02/89 till 09/90
1. redesign cluster with white backplate with coding plug in cluster.
2/89 bis 9/90:
1. Redesign -> Kombi (mit weißer Platte) mit Codierstecker im Kombi.

from 09/1990:
2nd redesign> cluster with blue rear back with coding plug in cluster.
ab 9/90:
2. Redesign -> Kombi (mit blauer Platte) mit Codierstecker im Kombi.

In a car with built date 2/89 or earlier all 3 variants fit.
From built date 02/89 only cluster from first and second redesign fit.

In ein Fahrzeug bis 2/89 passen alle 3 Varianten.
Ab Bj 2/89 kannst Du nur Kombis mit dem 1. und 2. Redesign verwenden.

BUT: the coding plug must fit exactly to the design of the variant. That is not changeable.

Aber: Der Kodierstecker muß immer genau zur jeweiligen Design-Variante des Kombis passen. Das ist NICHT tauschbar !

That he should look for the color of the backplate of his old and the new cluster.
Answer to that are given already by me.

There are three versions of the instrument cluster all with their own code plug. You can't interchange the code plug in between the different versions, but you can swap the entire cluster. Do be advised when you take the old cluster you need the code plug that's mounted inside the brown plug.

How did you get your car to do this?

The color of the back part of the cluster is a light blue. FYI, I picked up a used cluster and installed it. Just as suspected I inherited the other car's mileage so I swapped out/in my blue cluster and got my miles back. However, I don't think I noticed any change in the speedometer with the new/use cluster I installed. Therefore, I don't think my speedometer problem is in the cluster. I then changed the speed sensor in the differential and that was not the problem either. My speedo still reads slow. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Exelent URL... However, I'm still not sure how to adjust the OBC to make my slow speedometer read more accurately. Do you have any other references I could check, o' shogun?

Ok ,alittle off topic
Can someone tell me what those dash board readout codes mean, because i think i got taken by the original car owner regarding the miles on my car . but if i can check the chasis or other info i will.
Thanks

this is very old information that has floated around the BMW message boards for a long time. You can find this info at the following link that shows you how to "UNLOCK the OBC" and how to do the instrument cluster test by holding down the odometer reset button and turning the ignition. When you do that...it will give you the info you saw in those pics a few posts back. Some of the info is the software version your car is running...some is the last 7 digits of your car's VIN (good way to tell if the car matches up): http://home.iae.nl/users/bts/obc.htm

Printing out the pages at the above link to make a "hard copy" works really nice. That way you can take it to the car with you...not to say you will...but some have to read and work at it a bit to get the understanding of what to do. :D
