Someone posted these figures on Roadflea recently. I believe this is numbers imported into the US. I have no idea if they're accurate but here goes:

1989 1225
1990 2283
1991 541
1992 714

. . . has a potent bulletproof engine in a classic body that is light-years from what BMW and so many others are producing now. Couple that with a manual transmission for the enthusiast driver and infinite options for modifications to suit the owner's taste . . . it just doesn't get any better for a standard production car in that price range.
Obviously the manuals are rare (the autos have transmission issues) so that makes the 5-speed even more desirable.

And don't forget..
The 535 is much sportier than the nearest car, the grandpa's 735iA.

I guess it is a gem if one can find a decent one. Does it hold its value ?

Assuming you are pouring money and/or time into any E34 (the majority of the depreciation hit having been absorbed by the first and maybe second owner), it will hold its value quite well. But 535 manuals are the probably the most prized "regular" E34s; they and their engine are the foundation of this site.

I think I got a good deal (<9k) on mine and it only had 77k on it last year when i got it. One owner great shape, and i try my best to keep it that way. When I bought it the guy said that i could sell it for the same price if i didn't put too many miles on it....well, thats not gonna happen.
