Just a tip: If you have a V8 E34 (probably E31, E32 and E38 as well), don't buy a reman'd MAF from AutoZone (CarDone).
They listed this MAF as fitting my car, but it quite obviously does not :( It's almost 2" smaller in diameter than my MAF.
Not even close to the same size. So now I have to find a place that will have a MAF for my car. Any suggestions outside of the dealer? :D

I have 4 used ones here. All 4 are from 1988 E32 750iL and look like this.(pic from autohausaz.com, not original pics from actual parts)
https://www.autohausaz.com/secure/PartImages/0986280111.jpg
Location: Tokyo Japan.
2 I bought for my stock last year from a German used parts dealer, these are from a car built 07/1988, the other 2 are from a parts 750iL from built year 10/1988 I bought here in Japan some months ago. This car has around 190.000 km (not miles) on the clock.
I have never tested them, just keep them on stock.
I am also not sure if they are identical to a V8 M60 or M62 engine MAF. Check that out on the realoem parts catalog with the cross reference key there.
If you are interested, make me an offer.

Thanks for the offer, unfortunately that won't fit either. :)

It's a pity, as the new ones or remanufactred ones are really expensive

What wears out in a MAF? the wire can break, I know that... surely it doesn't 'go off' (perhasp it can get dirty, but with a lot of TLC it sould be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol or some kind of CFC... TetroHydroChloride I think its called... ? :) GP

Oh, its I forgot, its a BMW:
I meant to say, what wears out - apart from the connector?

When the air-mass sensor is working normal, the hot wire does not glow. To burn off any deposits and dirt, the control system will heat the wire red hot to 1000 degrees Celsius (1800 F) for about 1 second, after you shut off your engine. This is the cleaning process and only performed if the engine is revved up to at least 2000 rpm. So starting your engine, let it idle for a certain time and shut off means no hot wire cleaning.

yes, thanks Shogun- now I remember so I guess the MAF either works or it doesn't... there's no in between? Or does the wire get caked w 10k plus grime in the end? Sounds like it might, and not even THC will clean it... or would it... mmm well carby cleaner sure won't anyway... :D

I am broke and have checked all archive's. I am sure I need a new MAF for my 540i M60. Can a M50 MAF work on a M60 as i have a M50 525i MAF which i can use for test?
MAFs are a very popular replacement part for Porsche. Probably half of those are due to people who can't let well enough alone and want to reduce their engine's power by 10-15hp by installing an aftermarket "cold air intake" by the likes of K&N (yecch), and then ruin the MAF because the element gets coated with oil. MAF cakes up, car no go. The other half just crap out for reasons unknown. The engine runs poorly, won't run above 4000RPM, won't develop any power, etc. etc. Replace MAF, all's good. I've never had a problem with one, but then I'm pretty attentive to clean air filters, usually replacing them every other oil change, or more often if there's reason to think they might have gotten unusually dirty, like when the township installed the sewer line and the road in front of my house was just dried mud for a few months.
I've heard stories of people temporarily restoring MAF functionality (sort of like what Gort did to Klaatu in The Day the Earth Stood Still) by cleaning it with Q-tips, Gumout, Goof-off. Never tried it myself, but if you're looking at a replacement anyway, what do you have to lose?

No, this won't work. the non-M60 MAF housing is physically smaller in diameter than the M60 one. I ended up buying a new MAF at the dealer.
Before you replace your MAF however, take a VERY good look at the rubber boot that runs from the throttle body to the MAF. Mine was absolutely destroyed, and was more than likely the actual cause of my problem (Bad or no seals on both the throttle body and the idle control valve...).

I believe your right Jeff, there is no glowing on a M60 AFM. Only way to be sure it's busted, replace it with a working one and see the difference.
I read this is not the case at least on my 530.
