I know that most anything said now will sound kinda hollow, but I want you to know that it will get better.

Thirteen years ago just last week, my home was completely destroyed too, by Hurricane Andrew. I had a small place in South Miami that I lived alone in. When I got to it 3 days after the storm, nothing much was left. The biggest, recognizable things that I was able to recover were a bowling ball and a set of weights. Go figure. But I was alive, I had family safe elsewhere, and I had a job to go to that provided much needed support. It was a long couple of years, but soon things actually got back to something that aproximated normalcy. I thank friends, family, my insurance company, my employer, and a few others that helped me along the way. You'll get there too. Just hang in there and don't give up.

I dont know how he fared, but my house was completely destroyed in Biloxi.

Soft and green stuff on the cars is OK. Downtown and The French QTR looks to be a rather scary place right now, huh? Is your job open?

yea i was at work today, it's weird how power goes out, it went out here at the house in port allen (oposite side of mississippi river from baton rouge) around 9am yesterday and came back on around 5:30-6pm, went off about the same time in baton rouge and for most of the city hasn't came back on yet, around 70k homes in east baton rouge parish in the dark, 90k yesterday, denham springs where i work on the other side of baton rouge as far as i know never went off and greenwell springs not quite between more along side baton rouge and denham went off for about 6 hours

Looks like you did do alright Winfred. No doubt plenty of work to do cleaning up... I'll bet there are some scratches and even some dents in there... any broken glass or vacating roof tiles? :) GP

i washed the e30 after work and it looks good, i think the layer of crap padded it, da house looks ok so far

Glad to hear you're ok winfred and have escaped the wrath of Katrina. For a minute there, it looked like you had something going with Camo-BMW's...=)

Man, there's a lot of work to do in that city!!! Brian's right about keeping the faith. Hang on to your hope everyone! Things will turn around, it will just take a little longer.

yea a few houses got squashed in btr but we didn't even really get rain, not what we call rain by a long shot i don't think we even got a inch out of the whole storm, N O got squashed like a bug, all of the bosses relitives were underfoot at the shop today because the shop has power unlike his house

How are these damages covered in the U.S.?
When we had the big earthquake here in Japan 10 years ago with >5.000 dead people, only 30% of all households had an insurance against damages in case of earthquakes, because the premiums are very high here because of the high probability of such damages.
A friend had just 3 months before bought an appartment, completely damaged and no insurance.

Everoyne has home-owners insurance that generally covers these things. Or seperate flood insurance. I belive it's a requirement of owning a home period? I don't own a place, so i don't know these things :) The red-cross does disaster relief and the fed's can declare a.. state of emergency, right?, that gives people access to lots of funding.

Usually if a 'cane flattens your home - ie a tree falling on it or wind taking it apart - you're covered. If it's flooded then you can be out of luck, a lot of insurance companies won't cover flood damage. When Ivan rolled through my area there were a lot of folks who had to wait for FEMA checks because they didn't have flood insurance. I don't because I live like 500' above the city but those who have the need to live along the river should have it. Dad has it in VB, it's not that expensive.

Gee, the way things are going these days I wouldn't be surprised to see an insurance company or two try to claim Katrina was an 'Act of God' to avoid payouts... I've heard of Intelligent Design* (in schools), maybe 'Intelligent Weather' is the angle? :)GP

* Of course we all know that Intelligent Design (and thus the existense of God) was proven the moment the BMW e34 project was unveiled...

We were gonna do a roadtrip down there in the fall...so much for that. And I am NOT going back to Perry or Abbeville (Vermillion Parrish) (queue Deliverance theme).

Flood insurance is based on the Army Corps 100 year flood plane. Again-if your in it-your lender is going to make you get it. But if you don't have any and it floods, your SOL. It may be different in high risk areas, but that's the way it works in GA.

**** they won't let us get flood insurance, they said it doesn't flood where you live and you can't have it, in the 16 years i've been here it's flooded all of the houses across the street once but we are slightly higher and it only came up 3/4 of the front yard, the street had about 2'

....and it's (I think) available only to people who have homes or businesses that are in flood zones. And I think that they are designated that way by where you are on the map. It's a Federal Insurance policy, so it's not too expensive. Sorta. I have a dinky little townhouse, but it's 50ft from a canal and about 4 miles from the coast. A survey of my home put my elevation at 7.1ft for the ground floor. I'm a catagory A-2 flood zone....or something like that....and I pay about $225/yr. My normal homeowner's insurance is about $1400/yr additional. Fun.
