It's not the m30 535 engine it is the m20 engine. They are a 2.7l high torque low hp engine that was desinged to get better mileage. I used to have an '87 325e, kind of fun to drive with the torque but not quick by any means.

The 525e was pretty popular here in the UK back in E28 days. And god knows, with fuel prices going the way they are (nearly a UK Pound per litre) the diesel BMWs are selling like hot bloody cakes.

And christ, dude, how *old* are you? If I tried to insure a BMW at (what I'm guessing is) your approximate age, the Insurance company would have just laughed at me. You guys have it so cushy...

Lordy, it's a different world. At 17 in the UK, most kids have to drive cars of about 1.6l capacity at most in order to afford the insurance - I had a 1.3l ford with four manual gears. Even at 34, the insurance on my 540i is probably over $1000 at current exchange rates. That's with the full no-claims discount too.

i pay about 100USD a month. my 5 series actually reduced my rates because it had a security system, dual airbags, ABS brakes, etc.

Doesn't work like that in the UK. The insurance equation is basically: pick a number related to where the insured lives (likelihood of car being stolen) and multiply it by the engine size (likelikhood of insured crashing said car). Increase premium every year, no matter if any claims have been made and seemingly with no relation to no-claims discount.

If I got my tracker activated (at about UKP90 per year), it would reduce my premiums a bit. I wonder if you can guess approximately how much by? :)

i don't see how engine size is accidents.... I mean, acceleration plays a part in it, but otherwise... I can crash a civic just as easily as i can crash my beamer. if anything they should consider top speed, acceleration, and braking capability.
