E34 Performance air filter (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BMW-525-528e-E28-E34-performance-air-filter-kit_W0QQitemZ4574603189QQcategoryZ50138QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem)
Its here in Tasmania... Is it gonna be reasonable, or ****?? Would you fit it to your E34??

Nick -- it's a waste of money, in my opinion.
Aside from forced induction, there's little (if anything) that can be done to improve the stock air box beyond widening the constricting hole at the end of the inlet vent tube.

Whit as usual is very right, Nick.
That thing would restrict airflow. It probaly has less filter area and looks like it is made out of such light metal that it would rust thin enough within a few days for an M30 to suck the lot clean down its intake the first time you go Wide Open Throttle. :D It probably wouldn't even need anything to rust... just try putting you hand over the AFM intake with the thing idling (actually don't; it'll damn near suck your arm off).
The stock box is so damn good few can produce and improvement- it is neatly heat and sound insulated and even uses ts own cold-air intake system. I love how it does so much cleaning so quietly: I buy my filters in bulk from the US- the paper they are made from has an extraordinarily large surface area (bigger than a GM V8) and is of a very high quality. Taking it off in most cases is clearly counter productive.
The stock (but very high performance) filters cost me less than $8 each shipped. Can't beat that mate!

the 540 has a larger opening inlet before the box but that wouldnt be tuned for your engine.

I have a setup like this. Previous owner installed it. Next week, I'm swapping it out for the stock airbox, because it's so obvious that this thing is just sucking up hot air and not doing me any good.
