Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Corey I am from Western, NY.

I have just recieved a 1980 535i as a gift from my Ex's sister. The car is from Seattle and was brought here to NY in 2003. The car has been stored in a garage for the past 2 years and hasn't really been driven.

My question is... Where do I get started and where do I look for parts?

The car was ran at the beginning of summer but it was a little rough. I am going to start with the basics but being from 1980 I figured parts may be hard to find.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to making some new Bimmer Buds over time.

Man the GF is going to hate the time I spend on this car.

Corey

you can try www.bmaparts.com but I'm not sure they list parts for a 1980 535i. They have a 528i listed. You can try there though.

Post some pics.

Not sure if there's a Bentley Manual for that year, but you will want one if they exists.

I'm a newbie myself, so, I'm sure someone else will have better answers then mine. Have fun!

Cool. There are plenty of people here that know their stuff about these cars, so you'll get some good answers once they start reading the posts.

E12 offerings were 2.8 and 3.0 liters, making them 528i and 530i. The 535i didn't come along until the E28 535i in 1982.

BMW did offer a 3.5 liter in the E12.The M535i. If it is, you are one lucky fella.
Welcome and good luck.

Um, just a side question:

Do your ex girlfriend's sisters normally give you cars? Or is her sister possibly the reason she is your ex girlfriend :) ?

I was just making fun, don't want you to take it the wrong way or anything. Good luck with the car.

If it's the M535i, I'll drive to Buffalo to get it. I had thought that perhaps he had been mistyping and meant 1990 535i.

Do a search on VIN Decoder and run your VIN through it. This will tell you exactly what you have

Actually even better. Go to www.realoem.com and put in the last 7 digits of your VIN and see what that sit comes up with.

Keep us posted Buffalo. If that's a M535i, you're sitting on a gold mine. I think in the the U.S. it's estimated that there are only around 12-20 of them.

Im sorry its a 528I. She was wrong.

Anyway picked it up last night I will have pics up SOON.

Some minor work needs to be done but from what I can see NOTHING is wrong.
Except the Exhaust clamp broke so it is hanging.

VERY NICE THOUGH

Buffalo you may to change that handle for now. But after those E12 addicts get to you at First Fives, they may convince you to drop the 3.5 liter motor in the 528i. Ala 535i you will be once again. Enjoy your first BMW. Real bulletproof car. :D
