I noticed today on MSN.co.uk they have an article about the top 10 greatest BMW's (http://cars.msn.co.uk/carnews/ttgreatbmwsep05/) and don't mention the e34.
I can't believe they could have done this.

Well, the E39 six is on the list. Why? Probably because of the rack and pinion steering. Go drive a E39, definitely better than the E34. Still, if I was to get an E39 to replace my 90 535i, 5 spd, 102K, it would probably be the 2001-03 530i with 5 speed. That car is one nice car....

Unenlightened Philistines. The job of journalists is to express opinions on everything; knowledge is not a requirement. Though I do agree that the e30 is most deserving of first place.

The author has obviously never owned a BMW!
From the 8 Series description:
it employed the very latest in gadgetry and one of the sweetest 5.0-litre V12 engines in the world. At the time, testers complained that all the tech made it soulless, but 15 years on, it’s quite an experience. Chances are it will all still work too,
The 8 was such a huge disappointment that did very bad things to the BMW bottom line. These cars are insanely complex and expensive to keep running. Aside from the quirks associated with the v12 engine they had crappy electronics that were anything but reliable.
The e36...
Great car. Nevermind the two page laundry list of things to be fixed (including the rear suspension tearing out of the rear sub-frame!), this was BMW's first fully recyclable car. The materials used were substandard and cheap!
The e36 ti
I actually have always liked the ti, but there's no way in the world it's a top ten. the author says the suspension is from the e30. He's only partly right. The back end is from the e30 while the front end is e36. mmm...let's think let's mix two different suspension models and put them on the same car. Yeah, that sounds like a smart idea!
e38
The author says he would pick a 728 vs. a 750! Yes, the 728 would be "easier" to maintain. But he thinks it would be "nimble and fun to drive"! A e38 7 is NOT nimble! It's a freekin crusier not a grand tourer! As for fun to drive, I can't imagine how slow a 728 would be! An e38 740 feels very slow to me, I wouldn't wish a 728 on an enemy.
the 635CSi is the closest you’ll get to a workable ‘classic’ BMW. It’s a cracking old-school drive, with smooth straight-six power and surprising pace considering the price you pay for a minter – less than £5k
Nevermind the oxidation of iron with this model because it's as close to "old school driving" as you can get. 5k in pounds is roughly 10k USD. I wouldn't call the e24's for 10k that I've seen anywhere near "minter".
e39 528
Two phrases for ya
-WATER-Cooled Alternator
-Electronic T-stat
Both great ideas!!!
I agree that the e30 needs to be NEAR the top(maybe #2), but what about the 2002. That's the bimmer that put BMW on the map! It fed into the e30 craze of the 80's and early 90's and is still highly sought after today!
This person is probably just regurgitating something they read on the back of a brocheure.

Ok, let's do our own top 10 BMW list. I have 3 to put on it.
e34 - of course
e30 - obvious reasons
e30 M3 - Purebred sports car (probably included in the e30 category, but had to list it)

This is just marketing BS. The E34 made the 5-series what it is today. BMW must have understood that. Yes, the 3 series in E36 made the most amount of money for BMW due to the volumes but their 5-series segment was "carved" up by the E34 into the E39 and E60.
Heck, I would say, the most funky BMW would be the MZ Coupe (my favorite little car), and it has "hidden" muscle... with 6 speed manual. wowie...

Who cares. Its only MSN.
On the web you have all the choice in the world, you don't have to read that crap. Mostly Shite News. Dunno why you read it, by definition it has to be crap as its run by some of the largest vested interests in the world for expanding their own influence and to get paid to jam ads (some might even say disinformation) in front of the populace; it has nothing to do with news whatsoever.
Whatever you do don't write and tell them, it won't help or make the slightest bit of difference to anything that matters.
Brodee's suggestion has my vote; it'll be far more accurate.

C’mon, these guys are not talking 10 best........when 10+ years old.
Talking a newish (under warranty) example.
And in that perspective the e36 is a sure winner. As many can vouch i happen to have an ultra clean example so there is bias, but......................
The car has ‘sport’ balance in spades, i’ve been driving alot of ‘sports’ cars lately and the only one it couldn’t hang with would be a Honda S2000. And as a 15 year old design it may not be cutting edge but it still doesn’t look dated, inside or out.

“more exciting, more practical, the performance of a wing-footed god, an engine that can sing Mozart, and German good looks.”
For those that a 5er is a little too big for and won’t be track junkies (which is what rips the rear), a 4door 3er is a perfect ‘do it all’ car. I could even see myself lookin out for a clean M3/4 or converting Rolf someday.
”Hang up & Drive!” (http://homepage.interaccess.com/~motria/pablosgarage.html)
94 BMW 530iT&A 125K, ‘Helga’ (for sale yet? no *grrrrrrr* but getting warmer)
92 BMW 325i 120K, ‘Rolf’ (he’s baaaaack *woohoo* time for tunes)
91 Volvo 745T 194K, ‘Thor’ (13 psi *smirk* no power steering *grunt* )
93 Datsun NX2000 165K ‘Carla’ (alive, thumpin MP3s *grin* Hers *sigh* )

Either they're clueless or they're just trying too hard to be different. I think it's the latter. They pretty much ignored everything before the mid 80s. 328, 507, Neue Klasse, 2002, 3.0 CSL, Z1 etc... BMW built some great cars since day 1. I think including the X5 and Mini was just done to stir up the pot - too ridiculous. And 3 Series Compact???? This is why I don't use the internet anymore... M Coupe's an interesting choice though.

My apologies: the criteria for the Compact explains everything:
"This, or a Ford Escort. Which would you seriously prefer?"
The way all great cars should be judged...

Here's the list of non-M cars:
700 sport
3.0cs/csi
2002tii
e28 535is
e30 325is
e34 touring
e46 330ci PP 4-door
e32 735i
e36 318ti
e60 530i
In my opinion of course and in no particular order. It's always tough for me to acknowledge the 6-series cars as they just do not overtake the 5. They are flexible and heavy when compared to the 5. As a mechanic, I cannot endorse the 8 series, or modern 7's. The Mini is so fun to drive, but that's not a BMW. It's like putting a Jetta on the Audi List. I was never all that impressed with the e39 chassis, save for the M5, but the e60 M5 kills it but is yet to be tested for durability.
I think that article was obviously written by someone who was assigned to do so, not someone who is familiar with BMW's.
