What should I get for this Saturday's change? Time to dip into synthetic...

BTW the temps here are dropping to just above the single digits (in Celcius).

Perhaps a lower range is in order? Then again, I should be due for a change before the snow hits...

I got my 5 pack of eBay Mahle oil filters yesterday.
I am going to use a 5 Qt. jug of M1 red cap 15-50 and 1 Qt. M1 yellow cap 10-30 in my LOF this weekend.
So who's good at math ?
What weight will the oil be with this mix ? :)

Chris, you shouldnt mix different oils (difft wts of synthetics OR dino oil), seperation will happen as the car sits and settles...all I know Is I got my ass chewed about mixing a couple years back and they made very logical sence in doing it.

Jeff, I had no idea this would be a problem. I figured that they are both full synthetics by the same maker and it wouldn't be a problem, especially when they state their synthetic can mix with Dino oils OK. I had a couple Qt's of the yellow cap that I use to lube my metal lathe, figured I'd use one so I don't have to crack another 5 Qt jug.
That for letting me know !!

For those that voted 15w50... trading off cold starts at 15 for 50 at operating? Hmmm... is that high upper range worth it?

That's not on the list :(
This is what Mobil1 is selling in place of the performance driving formulation now. It is supposedly good for 15,000 miles. It's also what I'm using. The weight also depends on where you live and temperature range.

I tend to use the Semi-Synthetics as they say they are a little more stable in the long term, and stay very clean for long periods even in my Diesels running Veggy as fuel.............

What if there was a choice of Mobil 1 0w30... would most flock to that instead? :) I found out they can order the 0w40 no problems but would take a week. I'm not putting on 800km on there on this dino oil any longer.

My engine (M20) consumed a lot more while on 10w30. Switched to 5w40 and now it barely uses up anything anymore, definitely seems to like something w 40 better.

becuase of the cold, maybe 0-40w instead of 15-50w. i'm about to change my oil from 0-40 to 15-50 just to try it out, but since i'm in florida it doesn't really matter what time of year it is. the high today was like 90+ :) hopfully its cold sometime.. eventually.. in january?

I think the lightest weight for cold start up is probably more important than the brand.
I use 0w40 or 5W50 (Mobil1) here where I am in Oz where the coldest morning is -5 C.
I would also need to know if you use an electric block heater if you use the car in winter - but then if you park somewhere and it is -25 C then that is a cold start.
