530 wagon,

I just bought a wagon it says 530 and when i test drove it i was expecting the typical six cylinder throaty sound that i experienced in my other cars, However this was diff. More of a muscle car response. the used car dealer said it was a v8 i'm wondering what the car really is a 530 or 540???

To the best of my knowledge, the 530 is a v8.

the 530 is a v8, did it not come with an owners manual? open the hood....... take off the noise dampening cover and count the intake tubes.. 8 of 'em. or remove the "BMW" ignition coil covers and count the 8 ignition coils.. and 8 spark plugs. or peak at the exhaust header. the engine is also v-shaped, and i don't think bmw has ever even made a v-6? at least not this old.

the newer 530's might be 6's, you don't actually specifiy what year you're talking about.

new-b...you must give us more information than what you left. The 5 series BMW is into it's 5th generation...by just saying you have a "530" could mean that your car could be as old as a 1975 530i (E12)...a 1994 530i (E34)...a 2001 530i (E39)...or the newest 2006 530i (E60).

Now, you did say "wagon"...so that reduces the choices to the E34/E39/E60 5 series...which can range from 1993-2006. (and before some of you get your panties all knotted up...this is an INTERNATIONAL forum...and new-b didn't say what country he's from..so the possibility of an E39 530i Touring is plausible) :p ;) :p

The e34 530 has the - M60 B30 (small V8)
The e39 530 has the - M54 inline 6 (M57 if it's a diesel)
The e60 530 has the - N52 inline 6 (M57N if it's a diesel)

See what happens when you leave limited info! We get totally confused! :D

When you open the hood...what do you see...an inline 6 or a V8?

both V8 engines are the same size physically, with the 4.0 having longer stoke & larger diameter pistons...and a whole hellalotta more power than the 3.0.

Nikasil being the final part of the equasion is always faster than it's Alisil counterpart, weight and displacement aside.
