View Full Version : M60 Non-return Valve

Hey all, I just completed changing the intake gaskets on my M60 and neglected one detail when putting everything back together: the orientation of the Non-return Valve that is in the vacuum line that comes off the driverside of the PCV valve. The car seems to function with it in either orientation however I think there should be a proper way. Attached pic shows the part I'm talking about, it's the small black & white piece right above the big black wiring box.

I dont remember seeing that valve on mine, mine was a metal tube under the intake.

On my M60 that connection to the PCV is just a plug. It is like this diagram here
PCV Diagram (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE21&mospid=47381&btnr=11_1498&hg=11&fg=40). On my car, instead of a hose connecting to a non-return valve, there is simply a plug (labeled "7" in the diagram).

Hmmmm.... very interesting.

ladies and germs,

[insert nikasil joke here]

the non-return valve should restrict backflow to the [what bmw is calling a] PCV valve so i guess you could say that the arrow points to the intake manifold. There is a difference depending on both the build dates and whether 3 or 4 liter. The whole ****ing thing is a complete overbuild on their part, as a spring type valve with a simple tube would have more than sufficed. But then the nik's started to have some blowby issues and before you know it the pcv valve will gum up. I'd like to retrofit an old skool pcv next time I fix up a dump e34 m60. Cant do it on the one that has the internal pipe though, or can you?

flow should go to manifold vacumm, you have a 50/50 chance that it's correct as it is! That is a check valve so see which side has vacumm and then blow through the valve to see which way it is blocked. vacumm should flow freely through the check valve at idle.

There is no flow arrow on the valve so I had to use this method. I positioned it so that the side I could blow from was on the opposite side of the PCV valve (ie it could suck). This was opposite of how it was shown in the pic I posted. Air flows from the black to the white side. We'll see how this works. I was getting a odd code from the stomp test before reversing the valve. One short blink followed by a long blink, over and over again. I reset the codes (hold the pedal down for 10 sec) and it's now back to 1444. After my drive to work tomorrow I'll check the codes again to see if the valve was causing this.

Thanks all for your help.

BTW, this car has a 5/95 build date and was originally sold in New Jersey. After 3 years it made it's way out to CA and has been here since. So the extra crap I've got isn't some oddball CA emissions stuff like lots of cars get.

Do you guys also have all this air pump stuff?

whoaaaa...this looks like a car designed for california! I wonder what the deal with this is? I dont have any pumps or any of that vacumm routing.

Good catch on the pcv valve direction (I knew youd catch on).

I reset the computer and drove the car 25 miles to and from work today with the valve in the new orientation. The computer is now spitting out 1444. Looks like everything is working A-ok.

Although I don't have this on my car, here is an ETK diagram that seems to show most of the items in FiveOJester's picture
Air Pump F Vacuum Control (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE13&mospid=47406&btnr=11_1543&hg=11&fg=45)

I assume the "F" in "Air Pump F Vacuum Control" is for Fuel? Does anyone know what this system is used for? Is it associated with some option?

It looks like it regulates the fuel pressure before it hits the rail. or aerates it or something. I wonder if the other side of the rail has the return to the fuel tank like mine. Maybe in Cali, the constant venting of the circular pressure system puts out too much gas vapor?!

Aw **** it.

Alex, I'll take seventies music trivia for $300.

I always think Dylan on that one but you must be referring to the nitty gritty dirt band's version which got alot of play.

we should get a thread going.

how about these without looking:

Actually guys this vacuum line doesn't do anything to the fuel system. It goes over to some solenoid on the front right side of the engine that has hoses that connect to the air pump shown in one of the above diagrams. I'm guessing it has something to do with the air injection system that is used when the car is cold to help the cats warm up faster. My old 5.0 Mustang had something similar.
