View Full Version : E12 question reg. speed signal transfer

If I understand it correctly, the E12 does not have a speed sensor on the diff like all the later diffs.
There should be a mechanical system with a kind of bowden cable from the engine somewhere. It is a 518i, but the prob is, the car was made at BMW South Africa.
Someone on the German board was asking for the speed sensor, I told him on the diff on an E28. Now I have the feeling it is an E12 made in 1982. Probablty the E12 was longer produced in South Africa.
The E28 cam out in Europe in June 1981.

So the question: where is the drive for the speed indicator on the engine located?
He bought the car recently, but the speedmeter never worked.

And the funny thing is, that under VIN number on his registration papers it says
12821354.
But that would be an E30:

Daten für die Fahrgestell-Nr. '2821354'
Baureihe: E30
Fahrzeugtyp: 316
Typschlüssel: 1351
Motor: M10
Karosserie: 4-Türer
Katalogausführung: Europa
Lenkung: Links
Getriebe: Manuell
Produktion: 01/1988
---------------------
And what usually has to be repaired if the speedmeter does not work?

Found it has a cable.

Where does that go on the engine?

Probably it connects to the tail of the transmission like the 2002 used to before the days of electronic speedometers.

Thanks,
good info. He was always searching at the rear end of the differential as it is nowadays on the others.
Will tell him.

Just for info;
The South African E12 was built till 1985, some parts from the interior were already from the E28.
The German made E28 started already mid 1981.

the transmission. It runs into the interior where it joins a second segment of cable that connects to the back of the speedometer. The pieces of cable may have seperated at one of the connections or the cable is broken or the drive is bad. The odometer gears go bad but that doesn't affect the speedo. I could see the speedo giving bad info but it really should move when the cable turns.

He found the drive for the speedo on the trans. But the cluster does not look to have a connector for a mechanical drive

Any idea how to connect a mechanical drive to this cluster?
Since he bought the car the speedy never worked and he wants to repair it.

According to his registration document, these strange numbers are shown, but if I check the chassis number, an E30 comes up. Maybe in South Africa they used a different system?

That looks like an E28 cluster. Are you certain it came from the E12? Does the rest of the cluster work, tach, warning lights, etc?

I'd follow the cable from trans back to dash. There may be an encoder that produces the required 4675 pulses per km.

I think I see a 10 82 date code in the blue "triangle" on the right hand side of the 1st photo.

Well, at least when he bought the car like that.
Good EAGLE eyes you have. Indeed it seems that the stamp says 10 82.
Have to ask the chap in South Africa if other things work.
But he told me the car is produced in 1982.
Will come back on this subject when he replies.

Thanks

you were right. he found it. Left side is the converter, right side the cable.
Cable turns, so the prob must be inside that converter.
Probably difficult to find a new one or find a repair info to test it.

That part should be easy to test. Disconnect cable, attach DMM, should see voltage on AC scale when speedo cable spins. If DMM has a frequency counter it's even easier.

Thanks, will tell him. He did the following so far. Checked the other instruments in the cluster. They work normal.
Started engine (wheels not turning)and checked both wires with a DMM: no power on both wires.

Any more proposals to test? What should be measured/come out when the part works?
Shouldn't there be even power on one cable when engine is running but the cable not turning?

If car has cruise control does it work?
This part is a pulse generator. It works like the CPS in the newer cars. I wouldn't expect to find power in either wire. Part should generate several pulses for each cable revolution. Should be able to measure resistance at terminals also. Infinite or zero resistance would be bad signs.

My ETK doesn't list any E12's made for South Africa (ZA), only shows E23 and E28, neither w/ 1.8 engine.

I'd like to know the part number for this pulse generator.

Will tell you tomorrow because of the time difference ZA-USA-Japan.
Found out that even the E28 had a mechanical drive for the speedo on the gear.
p/n 23221200416 , and can be seen on the ETK on page 23_0352 Getrag 242.
But that was a special version apparently for German taxi cars, where they needed this special extra.

Just got the following info.
Part numbers marked on that pulse generator is
340.209/4/2 Z6 5.82

Apparently not a BMW number. Maybe a production lot number as it mentions 5.82, which probably means May 1982, which also fits to the built year somehow.
He will try with a drilling machine to turn the cable and measure with a DMM.

Could be the same problem as in seat adjuster cables. Make sure the cable engages at both ends.
