Seems like every year I need to make a trip to mom's place with a set of plugs for her e36 325i. The car won't start - and once I get a look at it the motor is way flooded. I know my M30 gets tempermental if I shut it down right away after a cold start - but its not anywhere near as bad as on M50.

see if they are stepping on the gas while starting, that can piss em off sometimes, but yes m50s are more prone to do that

That's got to be the culprit.

I thought that if you hold the gas pedal to the floor while cranking on fuel injected cars then it runs in flood mode-basically doesn't inject any fuel to clear the cylinders up.

thats ALL the way to the floor on most BMW's, i think some by year? are exempt.

You can do it very easiliy by starting the car in the cold - let it run for 15 seconds - then shut it off. There is so much fuel dumped out - it washed the oil away from the rings and looses compression.
