i'm working on this morning i pulled this expansion tank, now the question is did it overheat first and build up pressure and steam and crack the expansion tank or did it crack the expansion tank first then empty out the coolant and overheat? Only time will tell, have to wait until i get the new expansion tank and pressure test the system then run it to if it gets hot..:)

ill bet the crack started first then got worse as water leaked out until the end.

I don't know the answer to the question at hand, but when I saw the title of this thread, I thought someone egged a customers car, then tossed a frozen chicken at it.
Whew.

so far the e46s seem to be not too bad, window regulators suck ass, probably did a half dozen in the last couple weeks 3 on one car, that design is a ****ing joke it positively makes a cable drive mercedes unit look like a work of art

That split sure looks like right where you would expect the tank to fail due to excessive pressure.

damn....wrong again! Im going to use a newer shineyer coin on the next one. I still think it wouldnt have cracked and instead have spewed collant if the tank wasnt brittle...even so i was wrong.
