I was looking at this auction:

saw the narrow grille & repeater lights on the side of the fender - I didn't think they were standard then.

'95 on US spec cars.
It's basically a Euro fender. Pete, the other mechanic I work with, is rebuilding the body on his E30. Bought a set of Euro fenders with the holes pre-cut because they're *cheaper* than the standard US spec ones...plus, the lights are cool.
There are a few ways to get it done on an earlier e34:
1) Buy parts from the front clip on a late E34 (done a lot).
2) Cut the current fenders (instructions to do this are in TIS, if I recall)
3) Buy new fenders with the holes precut, prime and paint, install the lights.

I think US spec guards (repeater-less) would look great on a car without the US spec bumper-repeaters....

The reference is to the extra turn signal lights mounted in the fender. Not the side marker lights that are part of the front/rear bumpers.

I don't know why anyone would want them. I think without them it's a much cleaner look.

I like the extra notification that you are turning. I wish the mirrors had this feature as well. I even would like "puddle" lights under the mirrors when you unlock the doors. :) go figure!

i like 'em, but wish they weren't so big looking. e39 sidemarkers and late e36 sidemarkers look much better.
there was a e34 that added the e34 sidemarker where side molding piece is on the fender. looks like the marker is intergrated into the molding. looks pretty good imho.

I have a 9/94 build date that has those side markers.

My '88 Oz spec 525i E34 has the repeater lights on the mudguards (fenders) but not on the bumper bars.
I presume therefore that each country has its own specs (design rules in Oz) which determine what we get.
