Per request, here's my setup in general...

Actual components:
- HP iPAQ h4150 PDA (bluetooth)
- Belkin bluetooth GPS
- Cheap eBay PDA holder

Note: Unfortunately I forgot to turn it off today so it didn't turn on. Although I could hook up the car charger, I didn't want to have it complicate the setup so I used my phone... essentially the same thing but bit bigger.

All the components in the set up cost me about $20. I got the PDA and the GPS almost free but you can get a bluetooth PPC and GPS for cheap on eBay.

For navigation, I have several GPS/SAT/Compass programs loaded, plus the GPS bundled software (Belkin Nav), Mapopolis, and Streets & Trips 2005. I'm one to get lost so I also have a black and white eTrek Legend as a backup (not shown). The eTrek didn't cost me anything either :p

Oh for those wondering... there is a non-volatile flash memory (iPAQ Storage) that I backup the settings to. If it loses power, I just plug it in and restore.

From the pictures it doesn't look really getto against the color of the rest of the car....

It can change to a lot of colours. You can fine tune the RGB value and set day/night colors etc. Took me a long time to find one that flows with the interior... especially since I can tweak the color by small increments.

I do love having the hand held garmin unit in the car on road trips, but you taken it a few steps further and done a beauty job with the set-up. I'm not familiar with all this bluetooth stuff. Is all the nav info (gps coverages of various cities) you need available online au gratis? Will the unit handle topo and allow you to waypoint ect. ? Just wondering,

1. Very easy to install. Just find the stock wiring diagram and splice away!

2. MP3, no WMA... I haven't tried WMA but I don't believe so.

3. SD for extended memory. I keep a 1GB in there all the time. Whoops ;)

4. I got it for $198 CAD. More that $300? I wouldn't buy it for that. I MIGHT pay $250 CAD as a premium for getting matching colors...

GPS is free for anyone that has a receiver to get the signal.

The software is free and comes with most GPS... or better versions can be procured.

I think im going to get the garmin ique3600. It looked awsome, but now...I think a pocket pc and steetmaps 2005 with a gps reciever will do.


so, say I get this, an iPAQ hx4705 ppc and the microsoft street and trips 2006 with gps locator.

How do I hook up the gps locator to the pocket pc....since the gps locator connects to a usb?

or, do I need a bluetooth gps reciever?

Basically my PPC has bluetooth and the GPS is bluetooth. They connect wirelessly.

If there is a USB adapter for the 4705 then you might be able to do it. Given that Bluetooth GPS's are so cheap now, might as well go for a full wireless solution that will more than likely work versus the USB solution :) If you want decent navigation, the Streets won't do it. It'll just map and show location.

Any Bluetooth enabled PPC/Palm + any Bluetooth enabled GPS + any navigation/mapping software for PPC/Palm

There's no real tie between them other than using Bluetooth standard to communicate PPC/Palm to GPS, and NMEA (usually) from GPS to navigation/mapping.

Streets gives you waypoints and such but ONLY if you set it on your desktop/laptop FIRST. There is no active navigation. If you miss your turn, that's it. You find your way back on the map. Get what I mean?

Yeh Qube I'm using similar set up. Had a PPC with Bluetooth from before. Bought a receiver and mounting unit on ebay and have a reliable navigation now. Cheap too, if you already got the pda.

You might want to look into Tomtom software. Found it best as far as navigation goes, however my brothers Destinator is more precise once it comes to house numbers, where my Tomtom isnt as good.
