View Full Version : Fuel pump.
Hey all,
Is the fuel pump still in the same place on the 1989/1990/1991 525i bmws?
In the boot under the carpet, or is it in a defferent place to that?

Yep, it should be there, unless someone stole it :)
Lol, cool.
The reason I ask is because I think it needs removing and cleaning ect. Easy job?

Cleaning? Why do you think that?
Lack of power. Well so my Dad tells me anyway. I'm not there yet I will be to see the car on Tuesday. But when he did start it after it had been standain for a while it reved to 3rpm ect died and did it again or something..:S. And when he was driving it back to our place it was lacking power

Maybe the pump is ready for replacement, or you have a clogged fuel filter. I would try replacing the filters and doing a regular maintenance first.
Yeah that's what we're going to do. :)
I hope it's not the pump that needs replacement as i think they are very expensive :(

...do recommend you change the fuel filter. There's not much to "clean" in the pump.
Can you give us more information on the problem?
- cold run only?
- does it do it all the time? (repeatable)
- is it a soft loss of power or a hard cutout or a sputter?
- you mention the car had been standing - for how long?
- does the car start idle and generally run smoothly?

I found this in a search query. I've been exhibiting similar symptoms lately. Started it tonight with the temp ~ 30 F and a wind chill of too damn much. started alright, idle rough, but Ive heard thats normal for an m30. Backed the car out of the driveway and put it into D, and nothing. Pushing on accelerator make the idle even worse, sputtering and 3/4 dying out, no power whatsoever. Since auto tranny, car moves a bit on its own, and finally started going normally after 2 or 3 min of .5mph crawling. Get to the end of the street, stop, and then nothing again. I would've been better off getting out and pushing the car home, woulda been faster. Ideas? (89 535ia, 124,500) I'll check codes tomorrow, to see if that helps

Codes (http://member.rivernet.com.au/btaylor/BMWText/technical/MotronicFaultCodes.html#Displaying%20Fault%20Codes %20for%20Motronic%201.1)
I would first check wiring and connections in that area.

The fuel pump in a '90 E34 is imersed in the fuel tank itself. Access via trunk.

Ditto.
Maybe, by some freak accident, moisture got into the AFM and froze something. Doesn't really explain the IAT issue, though. Guess you'll have to do the split second conversion ;)
Seriously, though...it's been critter in the engine bay season in the northern hemisphere recently, and the wiring for the AFM isn't exactly located in the coldest part of the engine compartment, so something could be chewed/compromised and occasionally grounding out. In fact, last week I worked on a 540 that had its idle air valve wiring chewed by a chipmunk. Car wouldn't start, but that was for another reason.
best, whit

Okay,
No, it'll do it at any temp.
It does it 90% of the time, and I know that if I go in the car it'll definitely do it.
It's a hard cut out splutter.
A month it stood still.
It battles to start, needs 3 to 4 turns of the key before she'll power up.
She idles and revs fine, but as soon as you put it into Drive or Revers, power drops. It'll sometimes pull off okay, then it'll drop, almost to the engine cutting out. And it won't make it up a hill.
We put a new fuel filter on, however I don't know if this is a fuel problem, but you guys know more then I do on these cars, so mabye you guys can shed some light on this?
Many thanks,
Rob.
