View Full Version : White smoke from exhaust

I notice that when the weather is cold (below 40 degrees), my 535iM emits white smoke from the exhaust. Now, I've searched this topic and found that it could just be condensation because of the exhaust system being so complex. However, it seems like my car smokes the most of all cars on the road when I drive. There is sometimes tons of smoke and it drifts and surrounds the car at stoplights. The smoke doesn't smell, and it's very light. Also, I'm not loosing coolant, and the engine seems to be running smoothly. Is this just condensation, or something more sinister?

Mines been doing that since I got it and its nothing serious. Unless you are loosing coolant, smellin gas/coolant, have milky substance in your oil, overheating, a hole in a cat, failing emisssions or have CEL.... then its normal
It goes away after like 20 mins right?

My car also does that when i drive it when it is cold. Once the exhaust system is heated up it goes away. I can observe other cars on the road which have varying degrees of steam exiting the exhaust pipe, probably dued to their different starting times and exhaust configuration.

How long does this go on for? When its' cold yeah you'll get some condensation but after a while it should stop. ONce the engine/exhasust system is totally hot, say 10-15 minutes the amount should decrease and eventually cease altogether.

It won't cease if the air is cold outside but yes it does die down sometimes.

The #1 emmission of the gas engine is H20. I always thought it was CO2 but was proved wrong recently%^$#*. Hate when that happens! Makes sence that the water would condensate in the cold exhaust or cold outside air. Just a guess but from what I gather better combustion is more water, so bimmers should smoke more??????

Pift beats me. Aslong as it doesnt smell sweet, loosing coolant, or running like ****, don't worry about it :D
