Will a 225/40/18 Fit on our BMW's??

I'm looking at some Hamann HM2's 18 inch, and they have a 225/40 Series tire.. will this bolt up without rubbing?

Also why isn't this particular size suggested on Bruno's site??

I'm running 225/45/18s on mine and they do kinda rub on full wheel lock... will find out exactly where it's rubbing against later today in the shop.

Recommended tire size is 235/40/18 if you go the 18" way... this gives you only a 0.4% difference from stock tire size and speedometer reading.

I run 245/40/18, no rubbing at all, even on the track/autocross. Only rub I get is at FULL lock on the inside, but that's the Racing Dynamic sway bars, even my 15s rubbed once I installed them.

Jplacson: Did you have a chance to find out where you were rubbing?

It looks like im going to be buying a set of used wheels that have like new tires. The tires are 225/40-18 size (which is not recommended on Bruno's site or tire rack) So what is the big difference between a 225 and a 235 ? Isn't a 225 smaller in width? The car they are going on is a 1990 535i Automagic

as offsets of 13-20 mm seem to fit.

the 225/40 tire is shorter than 235/245-40;
so that should fit also.

Note: RD sway bar is bent slightly different than stock. rubbing on full lock happens :(

Mike: I do not know.. :( I have asked twice and his only response is this:

"I am not sure what the offset is but they came off a 1991 525i. I
e-mailed Hamann and they told me that they fit e34, e39, and m5. I guess

Great, so that tire size will work and since i'm still stock sway bars no rubbing there.. now only to find out the offset.. I seen the HM2's on an e39 540i at auction today- looked very good but made me think "aren't the e39 different wheels?"

Unfortunately, I never found out where the rub was, but after I had my suspension done, and front aligned... I can turn full lock with no rub (none that I can detect yet, anyway)

225/40 will give you a smaller tire than the stock size, this would mean your speedometer would give you a slight error in its reading.

235/40 will be about a 0.4% in size difference over stock, this would maintain the speedometer error to a minimum.

but can still fit. Also note that the 18" wheel has 8.5" width.
that means the width is much more suitable to a 245 tire than a 225 tire (imagine spreading/stretching the sidewalls/beads of the tire onto the wheel).

notes that the 18x8.5" wheel is available in two offsets: 13 and 39; so hope the set you are looking at is the 13 mm offset. the 13mm offset means that the wheel will 'stick out" a bit more towards the edge of the wheelwells.

however, judging by these dimensions, I think a 245/40 tire should fit - but I cannot guarantee this. it should not rub with a stock suspension. the 'other' e34 may have reported some rubbing but that may be due to a RD sway bar that also sticks out further from the body frame. I wouldn't worry about a little rubbing if it only occurs at full lock.

Mike: Thanks, I've ordered some hubcentric rings to ensure the hub is the right diameter. And I guess I will take a chance on the offset being right, Hamann emailed me back and said there is only one size for 5 / 7 Series and it is ET 19mm offset.. Maybe those listed at GMP are for the 3 series..

yours should then have some marking like 19 ET
translated meaning 19 mm offset.
forgot if you are buying from PP. if so, don't let PP sell you wheel designed for 3 series. ask Seller to confirm that

You were right, they are ET 13 mm which is good.. not sure why the guys at Hamann didn't know :(

Is that a decent price.. seems like a lot of money for wheels with even light curb rash but in the end I really do like the way they look will post some pictures once I get them on the car.. thanks for all the help
