View Full Version : F*ck ABS: Crash@>25mph sob

My new M5 body kit was going on on Monday and now this.
Wifey and are headed to the Kansas Horns game in Austin and we were headed east on 35th from Mopac...nearly stopped at the yield sign before merging onto to 35th. Pull on, get in left lane, going about 23-25 mph when chickie chick pulls out from street to my right. Can't really believe she was actually doing it. I'm saying no, you're not going to do it....then WTF!!!
Jam on brakes, steer to right, and try not to hit her right in driver's door. Manage to hit her left rear qp...
Totally sucks man. Not a single DOT-R on the car and now I need a new hood and left front qp, kidneys, headlight, german auto levelling headlight back, blinker, fog light, who knows what else.
WTF with ABS man? I swear with my brand new tires, we'd have stopped before impact. It's like it doesn't matter how hard you push anymore, the ABS takes over after a certain pressure and then you're at it's mercy.
Totally blows. I tell her, 'you realize this accident was your fault, and are looking at $5k in paint and repairs, don't you?' and she says, I am just going to tell my insurance co what happened. And I say what, that you made a huge mistake by pulling out in front of traffic, so bad that a car hit you in the second lane of a two lane divided street (total 4 lanes)
I could just scream, Im so pissed. Glad no one's hurt, but I'm so.....aw fu*k

from those pics the hood and fender look fixable with minamal plastic, the dents will pull out with a stud welder which is the modern version of a slide hammer but without all of the holes, a good body shop should be able to handle it unless theres something i am not seeing pictured

as for brakes i like gas sloted rotors they have a better bite despite what some say about no difference it's not a night and day improvment but it's something, i use to worry about out stopping the cars behind me with my 535

I'm pursuit trained. I can stop a car in less distance using threshold braking than ABS anyday but... In the wet I'll take the ABS. Sorry to see your car smashed up.

I'm not familiar with the rules in your parts, but if you don't get a police report, is it simply her word against yours? If she gets creative with her story and the ins. company or companies apply any % of the fault to you, do you just live with it? Or go to court? I hope I'm not 'speaking' out of line at a $hitty time for you, I'm just curious as to how the liability will be assessed if she decides to get creative.
In any case, I hope it works out for you. The skies were pretty grey when mine received $6000 in front end damage, but it turned out great.
Keep us posted,

In Texas, it can boil down to a swearing match, even if the police came and prepared a report - unless the officer eye-balled the crash, he's just recording the scene after the fact, and his conclusions about fault are just that. Since our compadre was headed to a football game, I assume he had passengers in his car - these we call witnesses, who can be very helpful. At the end of it all, the insurance adjusters get together and try to agree who pays - unless you stay involved in that process, anything could happen. The insurance companies even have a method where they arbitrate liability disputes between insurance companies. Worst thing is to have to file a lawsuit, so one's best approach is to hassle your own insurance company to insist that the other driver is 100% at fault. Don't settle for some 50/50 or 60/40 agreement.

You should be thanking the ABS! Without it, you would've hit harder, or skidded off the road.

Her insurance is going to cough up $2675, so the M5 body kit will mate to a new hood and front quarter panel.

of course my super hero spiderbatman has his own choice of vehicle after pointing out my tourer's "ouchies."
anyone remember where we got the clear sidemarkers that go in the rub strips. Was it Procarparts? Proparts? I can't remember.

Hey, I wore that spidey suit on halloween (back-up costume after grass hula skirt caught fire). It was a bit tight, but worth a laugh :D
I have nothing else of substance to say except cool kid and congatulations on getting your dues. Oh and someone mentioned the clear sidemarkers may be "crap" angry pancake says they suck (http://www.bimmer.info/forum/showthread.php?t=16040)
Why not get some europ trim and install the euro sides

I'll have to paint the white plastic black again, unless someone has the url for the ones that were already black. These are $41 for four as Bavauto is $29 for two. I am getting my clear blinkers from Bavauto, unless someone makes a better pair for the money. It's what I had
lil help?
who can find this for me?
51 12 9 066 785 is this a dealer only item, or can BMA order this. (M5 tow hitch cover)
Also need pump for headlight washer and to find out if you modify the existing washer tank for a second pump, or if they made a special tank for the V8 engine bay that holds washer fluid for both the windshield and headlight washers.

how come you don't go with some euro spec bumper trim? or does it not fit on your car? or you just like those white peices?

I paint the white plastic part black with flat testors black spray paint and they come out fine. I tweak the spring clip a little bit and they fit in snug.
With two small children I'll put out as much a visual cue as possible. Most of the euro's are actually doing the US mod.
Frankly, I'd put the side fender markers in too if I had the time.
I picked up the bumpers today from the paint shop. Man they look so sweeeet. Body shop is going to hang them for me. I just need the M5 tow hitch cover now.

Perhaps I should've just saved the money and gone with BavAuto. I can only speak for the cheap ($12 for all 4) sidemarkers off of Ebay. Moral of this one is obvious.

as they flash with the turn signals. I think they were only on the 95s? Is that correct? This is one reason I thnk the 95 e4s are the "best of the breed". Most of the fixes and other small improvements.
530iTouring, sorry for the damage. Dumb drivers are everywhere. I sure hope I do become a dumb driver at the wrong time! It can happen to all of us.
