What is the capacity of the automatic trans fluid on a 90 525i?

I did the transmission fluid change and swapped the filter. I have put in 3 qts of trans fluid and I am not even seeing anything on the dipstick. The manula says the capacity is 3 liters or 3.2 quarts. When I drained mine yesterday, it filled a 1 gallon milk jug. Am I missing something?

get it to where it's barly touching the stick and warm up the tranny on a 15-20 minute test drive then check it with the car in neutral and idling on level ground
