I'm changing the differntial in my 525i this week and am going to put Redline fluid in it. I checked the metal data tag on the differntial and it read: 4.10 4601, so I don't have LSD right? Which Redline fluid do I go with?

If you dont have a limited slip then you want Redline 75W-90 NS, the NS is important. Regular Redline 75W-90 is for limited slip diffs.

After a little more research I have found some places actually recommend regular 75W-90 for both applications and say 75W-90NS is only for racing applications. However, the place I bought my fluids from about a month ago recommended 75W-90 for limited slips(which is what I have), and 75W-90NS for non-limited slips.
So, basically I will defer the question to those with more experience

75W90 for non posi, 90W140 for LSD (posi). Make sure whatever you use is "full" synthetic.

75W90 not 75W90NS??

the NS is for limited slip rears, they have the 75w140NS for the LSD units....I dont think you have LSD Ralph.

"75W90 NS - This GL-5-type geal oil doesn't contain the friction modifiers for limited-slip hypoid differentials. This makes the transmission synchronizers come to equal speeds more quickly, allowing faster shifting and much easier low-temperature shifting. Can also be used in racing limited-slip differentials where weak spring design causes too much wheel spin."
It looks like NS is for non-LSD differentials, right?

What are your thoughts on their shock proof products?

Perhaps you should just give Redline a call and ask them - their toll free number is (800) 624-7958.

I didn't want Redline's recommendation, I wanted an E34 owner's experience. Beside's my mechanic has talked me into using BMW product.

if you want a owner's experience of something...i use royal purple 75w140 in my LAD with additive. mobil 1 was too thin for my unit. redline is not worth my time to find, royal purple is available everywhere (real autoparts stores, like napa, carquest). i wonder what your mechanic could possibly have talked you into using, the bmw saf-xo and saf-xj ( and xls) differential oils are proprietary castrol products sold to bmw outlets only, and no dealer anywhere will sell you any of it, are simply not allowed (they also only sell it in drums, so its not like they have bottles to sell you anyways). redline is apparently the answer for noisy bmw diffs, how true that is, i have no idea.

uscaralph, I have a 2.83 open (no limited-slip) rear and use Redline 75W90NS (for non limited-slip diffs). I also use Redline MTL (a full synth GL-4 manual transmission lube) in my Getrag gearbox. I have run both for ~40,000km (24,000mi) and the fluid is as clean as the day I filled the gearbox and diff. My only comment is about the MTL...it's a bit thick when the temp gets down to -10c to -15c (about 15 to 6 deg F) but thins nicely after about 5 mins of driving.
Cheers,
Duey
