the light is out on the temp control and the knob is gummed up or somthing. i'd like to take it out and see what's going on. i tried and couldn't do it, any tips?

are you sure there's a light behind the dial in the middle of your center dash? I thought the 1993-up e34 had painted incremental marks on their dials.
If your dial looks like this (painted dots on the dial ...http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/7/web/739000-739999/739005_29.jpg ...then it is not lit.
If it has a white transluscent dash on the dial...then it is lit. I believe the vent on top of the dash must come out first...there may be a screw that enters from the top that hold the front ctr vent in...look between the slats near the front of the top grill for very small screws.
