e34 530 m30 engine 1990 automatic 100,000 miles
car starts fine runs for 1, 2, or 3 miles then dies when coasting to a junction
if you put back in neutral start up and then runs fine for rest of journey
could this be a sensor or something. any ideas?

I thought the M30 engine only came in a 535 and 525. But probably not in Europe, I know they've always got additional engines so I'm probably wrong. Anyway, I've not run into that myself. I just thought I'd reply abd bump it back to the top. I'd think it is a sensor, posibly the engine temp sensor, but I'm really not sure.

Hi Ed,

In the early years, the 530 in europe was actually M30 straight 6 blocks displacing 2990 cubic centimetres. Its identical to the US version except for short stroke, I believe.

Sounds like vacuum leak or ICV to me.

I had a similar problem with a different vehicle. Turned out the battery was junked. Enough juice to start, but would not sustain a charge. Either that or my alt. wasn't providing enough juice to keep it charged.

If you can test the battery scenario, may be a good idea.

Not a vacuum issue I wouldn't think.

I vote for alternator/battery. had same thing happen to me. put your OBC in test mode and see what your voltage (test 9) says.
