Ah, 2 words and I probably butchered the spelling already...
Anywho, does anyone have any idea what this says? Or, more to the point, does the 540 win??

The last sentence is important:
The 540 is on the way to become the perfect BMW car. But there is still something missing to beat the best Mercedes, which at the moment is the 400E ;)

Like shogun says, the author concludes that this BMW was a big leap towards perfection, however still not quite up with the best Mercedes limousine, which is (was) the 400E. The BMW is regarded as rather sporty in comparison, even noisy.
The BMW did cost 10.000 Marks less than the Mercedes, which didn't even have the 5 speed auto. What didn't impress though was the high frequency at which the BMW would change gears compared to the 4spd Merc which will use only 4th from 120kph - unlike the BMW which still shifts down at 180 in 'E' and without kickdown. This apparently didn't sit too well with the tester, who prefered the more relaxed power delivery of the Mercedes. He claims that while the E400 could compete with their own S-Klasse models, the 540i is a long way from the 7 series, so potential buyers are kindly advised to also consider the M5.

It simply says: "Don't buy a Merc as they are shizen. The BMW (pronounced BMV), rock and should be the first choice of any self-respecting motorist.;)

Interesting to note that I read a similar comparison the other day comparing the new E 280 CDI, 530d and A6 3.0 diesel.
The conclusion was similar in that as far as driving pleasure goes, the BMW and the Audi trounced the Merc.
Horses for courses.
This is also seen with second hand cars - not many low km bimmers around as most of them get used for the purpose for which they were intended - driving. :D
Mercs tend to sit in garages. :p
(Daddy when I grow up I want to be a bimmer !)
