I've just had an interesting look through the 'what do you do for a crust' thread from a while ago. It appears that some on meager incomes have nicely modified cars. Where do you guys find the money??? I run two cars, two kids, a wife(part time work), a mortgage etc etc on a cop wage. I'm scraping to make servicing costs let alone mods. Please tell me how to do it! and no, leaving the wife and kids is not an option.:(

Priorities... and, some luck too, like I just won 400 dollars playing online poker. But I know what I make a month, and plan the mods in advance, and save up. Or, there's always that little piece of plastic with a zillion percent interest. Stick with selling drugs. Bling bling.

Of course, living at home with no real expenses helps too.

Believe it or not my father owns one of the biggest spare parts dealerships in regional NSW. He's a great help but genuine parts still cost 'genuine' prices.

27 and no kids, no wife and no house, no mortgage. Servicing costs are minimal when you do the work yourself. When you go one step further and become a car geek, there's always money around to keep it on the road. How do you do it, you make sacrifices. It also helps when you father gives you the car when you don't have one yourself :) I'm not complaining. I always say the best car to drive is one that you don't own.

Do as much yourself as possible. I maintain a fleet of 4 cars, a motorcycle, a boat and a house.

Save, Save, Save...Hide it............. Put away $20 here and $5 there (instead of buying coffee or a soda keep the cash). Make sure it is in $$$$ and put it in a place only you know about, I call it my stash (not the drug type or the one on your upper lip!). You will be suprised how quick it adds up. Plan your mods and do the work yourself... Good luck.

BTW: Wife, 1 child, Mortgage, 3 autos, 2 motorcycles, and a snow board habit.

Lots chaeper to buy parts than to make monthly car note payments. And, as much DIY as possible, though time can be a problem.

Basically I have three costs in my life: Tuition, Rent, Car upkeep/mods. My dad pays my car insurance as his contribution to my education. Admittidly, most of my mods were done between undergrad and law school when I had a job and lived at home.

I am 19...and I have about $70 in my bank account. Yesterday, I had to have my gf spot me $25 bucks to buy a secret santa present I was getting. I think she's paid for the last couple of dinners too.

Im Low 40s, mortgage, bimmer, Can-Am, 4x4 GMC, 78 Regal race car (over 25k invested on new engine and upgrades) 2 sleds, lots of work tools, own business I have had to fund this year, can live on dirt just need more dirt...might break 12k gross this year...cant see too many mods in the near future at this rate. Hope nothing breaks at home, on car or at the business.

rather be 20 living with parents, the first divorce is always the most expensive...over 250k so far.

mmm, 17, no rent, no expenses besides cell/insurance/gas/debt to parents.

All I pay is some to the rents a month, some to insurance a month, the rest to mods, then whatever is left i throw some in gas an dmake other poeple buy me gas for drivign them around in something other then a civic :P

here's an inexpensive and nice mod.. you can change your side (bumper) indicators to clears using reflectors you can buy from any auto parts store. you'll have to grind em down a bit (dremel or whatever) and use either silicone glue or a glue gun but once u replace the existing orange and red reflectory bit they look really nice.. and if you do em right they won't look cheap. takes less than an hour, too
