Folks,
I've been hearing a loud grinding noise on startup everyday since the temps have dropped last week. It sounds like the solenoid is retracting slowly after I let go of the key.
I have a used starter coming to fix this, but the Bentley manual says to take off the intake manifold to swap them out. In the manual, it is under the section of engine head removal. This is my first encounter with any more in-depth engine work.
Is all of that necessary? Disconnecting fuel and cooling systems?
Anybody got any tips for doing this in an easier way on a 1992 525I M50? Other engine versnions have a much simpler set of steps.
I was wondering if just greasing the solenoid would help. It is the last step before reinstalling the starter.
Any suggestions?
Thank you, bretheren, and sisteren!
