I found a very nice one owner black on black '95 540i 6-speed. The car had the engine replaced under warranty at 30k miles and now has 92k on it. Full records on everything and I know the mechanic that has worked on it. Paint is perfect, interior is perfect, can't really find anything wrong with it.

What is a car like that worth in this market? I was thinking $12k. That sound about right?

is the pic of the 540? i thought they all had brake ducts under the front bumper?

Movin up in the world Brodee? I think 12k or less, sounds like a nice car though.

I've seen quite a few without the ducts, mine has them though.:D

about 10k if all maintenence is up to date and nothing is wrong with it. Looks nice!

Brake ducts came factory on the '94 540's but not '95's. I've seen a couple '95's with them but not sure if they were added or optioned.

look under the foglights of onewhippedpuppy's bumper the holes in the valance are the entrance to the brake ducts

Edmunds said $8300 private and $10,000 dealer retail. The engine may have been replaced at 30K miles... but may still be nikasil... which is still okay.

Blue book doesn't really apply on these cars, that's why I was asking about the market for them.

The engine was replaced with alusil, I saw the receipt from Beverly Hills BMW. What dealer would replace a nikasil engine with another one under warranty??

Early in the Nikasil deal, when they didn't yet understand the problem, they replaced the old blocks with new Nikasil ones, and put a hotter thermostat in. For some reason they thought running the engine hotter would fix the problem.

They did it back then... when alusil 4.0 was not available. You can look at autotrader.com for some comparison... the problem is for $12K you can buy a E39 with stick too... 540i.

Wow, didn't know they did that, but it makes sense. He had the receipt for this one and showed me the huge stack of other receipts he had too. I think I'll see if I can swing it. It's the exact car I wanted when I bought my 525, just couldn't justify the price back then.

Price is close to e39 540, but that's an e39, who wants one of those :D

I don't think you get much in a E39 540/6 for $12k. I havent seen a nice one for less than mid teens. Not that they don't exist, but I think they're rare.

I wouldn't pay over 12, but for a superclean 540/6, I say pull the trigger.

btw - my 95 has the Brake duct...But I would love to add that lip that Brodee added....Can I have it? It is allready painted my color...please?

You have the single duct next to the driver's foglight? That's not what we're talking about. I didn't add a lip to my car I added the '94 540 brake ducts, that's what those are under the fogs. Then I painted the lower portion white to match.
