It seems that the starter on my '95 525 is bad. According to the Bentley's, the way to access it for replacement is by removing the intake manifold.:(
Does anyone know if its possible to remove and replace the starter without removing the intake manifold? The bottom bolt and the one on the block look reasonably accessable, but how to get to the one on top?

it's not that bad to do on a m50 in a 525 without pulling the intake, now on a 325 the intake comes off, i get the bolts with a 6 point 10mm wrench from the top, the nut is usually a 16 or 17mm

Do you stab it across the top of the starter or do you fish a rachet through the tangle of hoses and cables, or...?
thanks,

I need to remove the starter as well, so thanks for the advice Winfred.
However once the starter is free, how do you get it out of the engine bay?...

i usually drop it on the floor and feed the new one up from the bottom, wedge it against the oil pan or something till i can get up top to manuver it into place
