I had the engine block number checked at my bmw dealership and they said it was 1 725 968 but I cannot find any documentation on the web about this particular serial number. does anyone have any idea which material was used on this block??

These are the casting numbers to look for:
Nikasil M60B30 1 725 970 or 1 741 212
Nikasil M60B40 1 725 963 or 1 742 998
Alusil M60B30 1 745 871
Alusil M60B40 1 745 872
Alusil M62B44 1 745 873
Could it be an 3 at the end instead of 8 ? Wrong reading?

ditto, I bet they misread the number and it probably is a 3 instead of an 8. The area on the engine where the cast number is located isn't exactly the easiest to see:
