OT- to those who download music... which software is best?

I just don't want to try them all - I have heard some good and bad things about all of them, so advice is appreciated!

If you're at school, both Kazaa and Limewire will get red flagged pretty easily, and bit torrent is just ****. At home I have limewire and kazaa, kazaa seems better for porn and limewire for music. At school there's always some new
p2p sharing server popping up, be-it sharescan, i2hub, etc etc. Ares works now and again, but there are a lot of crap files. I miss the free napster.

If you're not a hacker (or greater skill set) you shouldn't be using any of them. I make a living bringing back computers from the dead because of these stupid programs. Nothing in life is free. Get itunes and save some money to spend wisely, borrow music from friends, learn to live life without instant gratification. You will be much more happy in the end.

I use soulseek.
i use limewire but my brother in law is over almost every month deleting some virus/trojan/someother thing that we get from it.. he's a tech guy so he knows pretty well what he's doing
lots of good music on limewire.. just dangerous sharing.
i try to borrow music from friends as much as possible since being advised not to burn it from limewire and since getting my ipod.. my collection is almost 5000 songs

i use Imesh
never had any problems with it, tis been great all way round. Kazaa is pure ****, it itself is a virus.

bit torrent its for more the full album and movie stuff.

i have a couple friends who use Limewire and have had no complaints.

(http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=40287) Bear in mind that most hubs require you to share a certain amount of your own material (to discourage leeching) and you'll find huge amounts of pretty much anything. You can connect to multiple hubs simultaneously, and the search and queue management functions are pretty powerful. The app is something of a resource hog, though; if you're downloading a lot, you'll find that your computer slows down a bit.

bitcomet absolutly rocks for anything as long as you have a good source for files, kazza lite used to be good but now if you dowmload any WMA files their usually loaded with ad files.

And some people were complaining about how copying the Bentley manual was so wrong, so bad, so dishonest. I guess there must be some sort of difference, but I don't get it. However, my opinion is that if someone puts something out there it's fair game whether it's movies, CD's, books, pictures, etc. If the artist/publishers don't like it they can get another job.

I used to think that but then I found bitcomet, which has automatic port forwarding. There was a site somewhere that went through all the configuration to make it faster. With multiple downloads going I get up to 500KB, thats not a slouch.

As an accomplished jazz musician and a responsible ADULT, I'd probably rather preserve the intellectual integrity of the artists and learn to save my money for a new car.

Oh how I laugh when I see people STILL using Windows. didn't that come out in '92 or so? And hasn't it been revised/patched on many occasions to make sure you get the blue screen of death, or need to ctrl-alt-delete five times a day? Or be silly enough to open .exe virus files? No thanks, I'll keep my stable Mac thank you!

I think I’ve used about every single program mentioned above, by far I found emule the best, but it is one of the slower ones. I guess you can’t have everything. You have to leave it running overnight to actually get something, and if you don’t have broadband, forget about p2p. Also formatting my hard drive every couple of months is a usual, no matter how good your fire wall is you will get junk anyways. About buying CDs, or movies. Oh yeas I do buy them, if I like them, original CD/DVDs always look better in a collection than pirates. And choosing between a car or a CD? Some people I know spend twice as much on cigarettes daily It is called balancing your budget.

I don’t see myself using Mac. Not that I don’t like them, but there is no software that I use. If there was AutoCAD 2005, or some sort of CNC control program for it, I would buy it. I ‘m sorry to say but some of us don’t have alternatives, and that mouse, god where are the buttons, and no wheel, sux :).

I use shareaza and kc easy no crap but with all downloading from software like limewire etc watch what you download. the 2 I mentioned heve been very low maintenence for me the last year or so(touch wood)

1. OS X is an evolutionary software. Just like windows there have been many previous versions of the Mac OS.

2. All of the Mac hardware is proprietary. It only comes from Apple - much less in the way of increased performance or true inovation.

3. When only 3% of the computing population uses a Mac - no one is going to try and write a virus for it. There is no doubt the windows environment is targeted due to its widespread usage.

4. Stability is really a user-centric issue. Start loading a bunch of system resource consuming software - and the machine will loose its stabilty. I am running Windows Server 2003 on a box - very very tough to bring that puppy down.

5. x486 architecture is far more open. Windows, Linux so many OS choices. I don't see the same available for the Mac - once again you are stuck with Apples product only.

I think some CAD software is out for OS X now. I know there was CADintosh but that's probably old hat now. The mouse is just USB. You can plug any 2 or three button mouse in with a scroll wheel and it'll work ok. It was just that first step away from PC's that I found the hardest. The "well how can I do that?" or "Where's 'My Computer?' " but there's always more utilities being written, eg Mozilla, Limewire, Office etc.

Hi Derek,
Thanks for your response. Indeed OS X is evolving the same was as Windows. And most people have their favourite version of Windows (95 OSR2, NT, 98 SE etc) just as some Mac users prefer OS 9.x .
PC architecture is incredible, there is no doubt about that, and the amount of hardware you can buy is brilliant, some of which will work on a Mac.
As to viruses, as you correctly point out, no-one is going to write a virus for a Mac, much to my delight. I only need a firewall.
I used, abused and built PC's for over 5 years and was growing tired of seeing screwed up computers with the same problems on them, such as viruses, screwed up registries, deeply fragmented hard drives etc, all problems that the average everyday computer user faces. I know there's a lot of computing geniuses here on the forum, but I really feel sad for "Mr 50 yr old never had a computer in my life until now" and the O/S problems he will have. Guess I just like things to work properly with minimum fuss. If you bought a Microwave oven you'd be furious that you'd need a software update to cook something for over two minutes......

Stop buying any more music, or if you want to it free. Record it off FM radio using an iRiver player. Get into ODEO and listen to millions of fabulous podcasts, plenty with great music for FREE and is completely legal!.

PodCasting is the future, as they say.....
