I started out wanting a gps in the car using a pda/gps receiver, but figured the screen might be too small. So being curious I looked into the carPC category.
I figured the basic computer parts would cost about $600 (http://www.caseoutlet.com/shopexd.asp?id=369) and for the monitor I estimate about $270 (http://www.mp3car.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=33). Planning to spend about $1300 in total.
I already have the gps receiver and the program so that's pretty much set.
I'm wondering if the pc can handle the monitor and second how the monitor powers up. I tried reading some other forums, but I still can't figure it out.
Any input?

With respect, your setup won't be able to touch the usability, clarity or functionality of a good satnav unit from Garmin.
I plan to get one (eventually) and mount it ahead of the shifter, then construct some sort of faceplate that spans the whole width of the center console and makes it look like OE.
I've done a lot of homework on satnav lately. The Garmin units are really great. Screen sizes range from 2" to 7".

The gps program that I have is Iguidance 2.1. It has all the functionality as the Garmin and more. With respect to the clarity I checked out this (http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynav.jsp) and personally I find the layout for Iguidance more appealing.
I have over 20gigs of music and 100+gigs of movies and whatnot. I find using a carPC will fit my needs.

Okay. Keep us updated. If it works out, I may consider that solution myself!

How bout a Mac Mini? Just throwin' that out there. There are some pretty slick solutions out there and you can't beat the tiny, near-silent form factor.
...Except iGuidance isn't compatible. Here's (http://tinyurl.com/cul9r) a useful Google search for GPS solutions, and this (http://tunertricks.com/blog/index.php?p=40) is a pretty bitchin' GTI install. I bring it up because you mentioned pricing hardware for about $600.00, which gets you a decent Mini (including BlueTooth, which would be badass).
No clue about powering the display or computer; I'd reckon a DC/AC inverter would do the job. Gotta go, dinner with the in-laws.
