View Full Version : Winfred: a coolant sensor question..

Apparently the one I tapped "pin 78* is 0v - 5v reading... whereas the megasquirt wants a resistive type sensor. So, the Pin 78 one is at hte ECU, which is electronic signal to the ECU, while I think the megasquirt wants the kind of reading that goes to the coolant temp gauge on the cluster. Where can I tap that signal? Where does the wire to the cluster meet up in the engine bay? Any idea on color? 9/91 build date M50 non vanos 525i manual.

i am trying to e-mail you the bmw etm, that should help if it goes through

retrying, it's a little big and almost made it the first time but timed out, i zipped it and hopefully it'll fly this time, be a few minutes

crapped again dammit, ill see if i can get some useful info for you

Do you have instant messenger? You could send it direct!

Or FTP.

no im and ? on ftp fat tatooed pussy? looking at the diagram 78 is the signal and 43 grounds it and a few other sensors, id take screen shot of it and send those but the diagram is so big you are only looking at a small portion at a time

the sensor for the cluster is brown/violet pin 26 at the cluster

should be going through pin 12 at the harness connector from the engine harness to the body harness by the fuse box, same color

Any pic of this location?

Also, any description of what kind of signal goes over this pin 26/12? Ie., 78 said 0v-5v ... any info?

you got mail, if the red circle showed up it's in there. since i lost use of internet explorer it's a little harder to play with images

Ok got it, thanks fo much for the help!

Is this the same area that the +12vdc jump post is?

real close, i can't find whats passing through those wires, i can on a good quanity of other wires just not those, it's probably in there hidden somewhere

Any harm in taking a multimeter to it and grounding to the shock tower?

shouldn't hurt

that's the one i was looking for, saw it in passing and couldn't find it when i wanted, must be blind

Bill I think we're confusing pin #'s.

I am not using Pin 26 @ the ECU. Winfred told me the coolant temp sensor going to the gauge cluster temp gauge is pin 26 @ the cluster or pin 12 @ the "connector from the engine harness to the body harness by fuse box"

When I asked for description of signal going across 26, that's not 26 @ the ECU. Winfred told me its 26 at the cluster, not the ECU. I was wanting to know details about the connection at either pin 26 on the gauge cluster or pin 12 at the engine harness/body harness. Sorry for confusion.

see,

should be going through pin 12 at the harness connector from the engine harness to the body harness by the fuse box, same color

well if you can figure out how to receive a 11 meg pdf file from me you can find out all of the answers from the factory etm

using rar and zip was 12.7 megs and then i ran out of room uploading it... so instead i uploaded an electrical primer for Gayle.....

i think the one for the 92 is around 11, atleast that's what it said when i tried to send it, ran it through zip and got it in the 8s and it still didn't fly, my free 10 meg web space with cox is about full or id load it to there and let him snag it

i don't know why it said 11 when i tried to send it i just checked and it's 14.4, zip got it into the 8s though

Did you suceed connecting the system to the gauge sensor keeping your gauge in?

I think i have decided to install a GM coolant temp sensor in a T fitting, I will post pics when I get it done. Thanks winfred and bill, this info is still good, I may still use it!
